Whilst he never quite managed to articulate his points very well and always came across as aggressive towards Brink he had some valid concerns and like many others he’s simply abandoned hope that Brink can be salvaged now at this stage. Yeah he didn’t need to make a new thread each week though. Anyway the moment has passed by now for many, I’m not quite there myself but I suspect it wont be too long before I too lay Brink to rest.
They are people on these boards that obsoletely love Brink and that’s great, for them, what they don’t seem to understand that we all had different expectations of Brink and by that I don’t mean I was expecting ET or ET:QW reskinned before wolfnemesis suggests otherwise. We expected a game crafted with the same love and attention as their previous games.
The core game is quite nice but is spoiled by several avoidable factors for some folk such as poor UI, unreliable automated actions, lack of end user customisation (not talking about barbie stuff), excessive hand holding and much more.
Then they are other things that aren’t quite readily apparent but do make me feel less inclined to care for the game. Little things like the humorous Vsays in ET and ET:QW, they were legendary, they added a certain charm to those games that is lacking in Brink. Or how about the cheesy end of round voices in ET:QW, little things like that which lightened up the mood, their past games never took themselves super seriously, Brink on the other hand seems to try too hard.
The reason why so many of us that didn’t quite enjoy Brink as much as we had hoped have stuck around is that we’ve put 100s possibly 1000s of hours into their past games and I’m not just talking playing them, many of us have been making mods, maps and movies for their games for the past 8 years. I myself have made about 20 maps and worked on 4 mods for SD’s games.
We know their games like the back of our hands so when we got our hands on Brink we were a little disheartened with some of the design decisions and some of the bugs and stuff but instead of hating on them we have tried helping SD by pinpointing faults in the game and suggesting improvements. Apparently this makes us haters and we are stuck in the past or whatever but as long as we get a better game next time round you can call us what you like.
At the risk of redundancy, I’ll quote this again. Good post that articulates my disappointment with Brink. Sadly, I’ve already drifted away, only checking these forums for ET:QW and ET:Xreal news.
About Vsays: I can see why SD did it. The narrative surrounding the Ark is meant to be a serious tale (as opposed to WWII which was just a bit of a lark) and the comic end-of-round stuff might have seemed a little out of place. To be fair, it is a good story, but the trade off wasn’t worth it. You lose the light-hearted vsays banter and end up with a computer game thanking you for reviving/equipping another human player, which is both bizarre and slightly patronising.

Would you consider a commodore 64 a console? If so that was my first console. If not then I guess the Famicom was it. And my first PC didn’t have a harddrive. But that was ok because it had 2 disk drives so I could leave the DOS disk in A: and play games off B:
:stroggtapir:
Bad Zenstar! Baaaaaaaaaaaaad Zenstar!
The C64 was very much a “home computer”.
Of course, Commodore did briefly release the C64 hardware in a console package
