Bye Bye SD !

A couple prev post where about the UI, but the current one in Brink somebody made it
Can that person not change/build some suggestions of the community?

Sometimes the object lines, a lot of icons etc cover a whole enemy while he stand clearly in front of it pretty annoying

OK dude, I’m seriously giving you +1 rep for your attempt to use the English language but I truly have no idea what you are trying to say. (Sounds interesting however.)

Sry  but the person who made the current HUD in Brink can change it I assume?

(Jimmy James) #84

Ah, yes this is actually a problem for SD apparently. (from page 2 in this thread):
It wouldn’t though, it requires a GUI coder and possibly a few days of a 2D artists’ time, maps require level designers and some artists, new abilities and such require artists and game coders.

They have had trouble trying to find a GUI coder though so there’s nothing much that can be done yet. I’m still not sure why it’s so hard to find one though. I guess it’s not exactly the ‘sexiest’ role in game development so not many people do it as a specialty?
Ok i’ll make the question even more obvious since it seems to be getting lost somewhere. Where is the GUI coder that created the current HUD, and is there any reason he/she can’t be used anymore?

Over under on when OP returns to forum? 2 days. 2 weeks. 3 more hours.
Whilst he never quite managed to articulate his points very well and always came across as aggressive towards Brink he had some valid concerns and like many others he’s simply abandoned hope that Brink can be salvaged now at this stage. Yeah he didn’t need to make a new thread each week though. Anyway the moment has passed by now for many, I’m not quite there myself but I suspect it wont be too long before I too lay Brink to rest.

They are people on these boards that obsoletely love Brink and that’s great, for them, what they don’t seem to understand that we all had different expectations of Brink and by that I don’t mean I was expecting ET or ET:QW reskinned before wolfnemesis suggests otherwise. We expected a game crafted with the same love and attention as their previous games.

The core game is quite nice but is spoiled by several avoidable factors for some folk such as poor UI, unreliable automated actions, lack of end user customisation (not talking about barbie stuff), excessive hand holding and much more.

Then they are other things that aren’t quite readily apparent but do make me feel less inclined to care for the game. Little things like the humorous Vsays in ET and ET:QW, they were legendary, they added a certain charm to those games that is lacking in Brink. Or how about the cheesy end of round voices in ET:QW, little things like that which lightened up the mood, their past games never took themselves super seriously, Brink on the other hand seems to try too hard.

The reason why so many of us that didn’t quite enjoy Brink as much as we had hoped have stuck around is that we’ve put 100s possibly 1000s of hours into their past games and I’m not just talking playing them, many of us have been making mods, maps and movies for their games for the past 8 years. I myself have made about 20 maps and worked on 4 mods for SD’s games.

We know their games like the back of our hands so when we got our hands on Brink we were a little disheartened with some of the design decisions and some of the bugs and stuff but instead of hating on them we have tried helping SD by pinpointing faults in the game and suggesting improvements. Apparently this makes us haters and we are stuck in the past or whatever but as long as we get a better game next time round you can call us what you like.
At the risk of redundancy, I’ll quote this again. Good post that articulates my disappointment with Brink. Sadly, I’ve already drifted away, only checking these forums for ET:QW and ET:Xreal news.

About Vsays: I can see why SD did it. The narrative surrounding the Ark is meant to be a serious tale (as opposed to WWII which was just a bit of a lark) and the comic end-of-round stuff might have seemed a little out of place. To be fair, it is a good story, but the trade off wasn’t worth it. You lose the light-hearted vsays banter and end up with a computer game thanking you for reviving/equipping another human player, which is both bizarre and slightly patronising.

Would you consider a commodore 64 a console? If so that was my first console. If not then I guess the Famicom was it. And my first PC didn’t have a harddrive. But that was ok because it had 2 disk drives so I could leave the DOS disk in A: and play games off B:
:stroggtapir:
Bad Zenstar! Baaaaaaaaaaaaad Zenstar! The C64 was very much a “home computer”.
Of course, Commodore did briefly release the C64 hardware in a console package

And who owns DICE?

EA Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment AB (EA DICE, or just DICE) is a Swedish video game developer, wholly owned by Electronic Arts, best known for the Battlefield video game series and Mirror’s Edge.

(thesuzukimethod) #91

i know the drive to be not-wrong on the internet is fierce (hence this post, right?)…but isnt that the same logic that has people saying that Bethesda made Brink?

(Verticae) #92

I doubt that that’s very far from the truth, though…

(thesuzukimethod) #93

haha - my 16:29 edit came in first!

also, to make this post “productive” and not just a gentle ribbing (i hope that means the same thing to you as it does to me)

i’m guessing that the publisher/developer relationship is similar to the producer/artist relationship in the music industry (something i actually have some knowledge about)…in that…some publishers are probably more hands on w/ demands and expectations, and others probably just cut the check. w/o insider knowledge, it’s all conjecture (which i am very fond of, btw)

(Verticae) #94

Do I still get a point? D:

(thesuzukimethod) #95

you get 2! or 5…or however that works.

(SockDog) #96

I wouldn’t disagree with anyone that said DICE are making BF3, however they’re owned by EA so in technicality EA are also making BF3. DICE are EA in all but a Studio name. Anyway, I really wasn’t looking to cross cocks over it, I was just responding to MrFoxer pointing out CS is made by Valve like that somehow invalidated by reply to Bombaklak, something he’s still not bothered to explain.

(thesuzukimethod) #97

yah yah. as with vert. just a gentle ribbing (hence my own self awareness about my own “need” to post)…trying to keep things light around here…although sometimes i wonder if my sarcasm helps. “curse you dry sense of humor” :shakesfist:

The comic stuff hooked new players into using the more gameplay specific stuff.
It was there to lighten the mood sure, but it kept players using their menu system.

(Nail) #99

Except ZeniMax/Bethesda doesn’t own Splash Damage, whereas EA do own DICE

(Stormchild) #100

Owning or not owning, the people who make a game are the people who make it, not the people to pay for its development. Those allow the creation but don’t create. They “just” give the money, which is not really much, depending on how they got this money in the first place.

Money was created by humans, and yet it now controls them. Rise ! Rebel ! The Revolution is here brothers ! Burn the stock exchange ! Making money from speculating and thin air is parasiting the whole economy, destroying companies, lives and countries so the selected few can continue to rule !! Kill them all !!!

… ok I got carried away (did I ?), it’s this Resistance thing !
