Built in tweak config?

(chippy) #1

This is something I’ve been wanting to see tryed out in numerous games but seeing as it never happened (as far as I am aware) it might not be a good idea, but I would definately like to see what everyone else thinks about it.

Configs
Most games as we know it all have different presets when it comes down to the video options.

Example:

[ul]
[li]Low
[/li][li]Medium
[/li][li]High
[/li][li]Ultra
[/li][/ul]

I’d like to see an option such as “extreme” that takes this even further. Not only to improve visibility but also the frame rate. I’m basically asking for a built in “tweak” config. Removing the fog (which I personally think should be removed completely anyway), wall marks, eject brass, debree flying around, reducing dynamic lights etcetera, etcetera.

Everyone likes it differently, some like to play it in all it’s glory, some like it somewhere in the middle and some simply can’t because of their hardware (and some of those people might not even have the know how to make a config like this).

I also believe that this might help the future leagues of DB. I’m going to take COD2 and Clanbase as an example here (short example but I hope it get’s the point across). Basically, COD2 and it’s woefully crappy AC, Punkbuster, allows the “r_picmip” to be set at 3. Everyone can use it, but not everyone knows how or simply does not know. Therefore they have set a rule saying it can not be any lower than 2, because of that’s what the “low” setting in the menus set’s it to.

I hope you get the idea.

TL;DR

Built in extremely low video options/cfg to reduce visual clutter, improve the framerate and all that jazz a “config” does, selectable in the menus.

Thoughts?

Warsow (awesome game btw) has these

contrast
low
medium
high
high+

Contrast makes all the walls one colour, floor one colour, basically removes everything and gives the most fps.

i like the idea to get good in a game no matter what its given. I dont understand the mentality, having more advantages than your opponent which brings me to fair play and equal terms.

The idea isnt bad, but i dont like to support this thinking. This game should be played as it is supposed to be and intended by the dev team. But before touching cfg is allowed, i would rather see it in the options when possible, and strong restrictions to the cfg.

I have no problems with low. Instead of contrast mode, there should be a placebo mode, there are too many misbeliefs in the esport i guess xD

We will definitely have a setting with absolutely everything possible (that we agree with) either turned off or downscaled for performance reasons.

Whether this involves modifying the current ‘Low’ setting or adding a new ‘Lowest’ setting, I can’t say

Getting the game running on as low a min-spec as possible is a major priority for us, and scalable options go a long way in that regard.

nice to hear!

Yeah i’d like to see reasonable boundaries to the cfg file to limit what can be achieved in game (such as j4b removing bushes right now is a unreasonable imo)… for me i like to edit the cfg via each line, this is a fun aspect for me to learn how the game functions/can be tweaked and therefore game’s that exclude this and make it entirely menu orientated ruin’s a little bit of fun for me. For the mass majority a lowest setting in the menu would be beneficial and provide a standard for esport league’s to operate by.

But yes a “lowest” setting which basically hit’s the lowest allowed values to achieve the highest FPS should be implemented also a custom setting to allow people to boost certain aspect’s and keep others minimal should be around as well (we have that now right?).

While we’re on the topic of config files - it would be nice to have a per-class config file, or allow to exec a given config file during gameplay. That way we can have different settings (sensitivity, key binding etc.) for each class.

You can setup binds like this in the config, such as when you press F1 it can say to your team, hey ya’ll im going soldier! and then you could even modify more binds and such.

It is there, just have to play with it in: ShooterInput.ini

eg.

Bindings=(Name=“F1”,Command=“ClassSoldier”,Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False,bIgnoreCtrl=True,bIgnoreShift=False,bIgnoreAlt=False)

To ->

“Bindings=(Name=“F1”,Command=“ClassSoldier | TeamSay :Spawning Soldier: | [OPTIONAL OTHER COMMANDS]”,Control=False,Shift=False,Alt=False,bIgnoreCtrl=True,bIgnoreShift=False,bIgnoreAlt=False)”

You can see there are lots of tricks you can do in there right now, but not 100% similar to like RTCW/ET where you could set up “exec command-name” and such.

Bushes?`Oo i dont know what you mean by this …
You can setup binds like this in the config,
Not quite. The thing is I want to use Mouse2 to zoom on Assault and Mouse2 to use the defib. as Medic. This could be achieved either by per-class config or by beeing able to execute different configs - like exec medic.ini in console.

I was thinking that maybe there should be a competitive pre-set what the community comes to a (sort of) consensus on. So you can switch to that when playing in a more serious setting without going into config files. This is more for noobs like myself who suck at games and PC’s in general.
