Building trickjumps

(DerSaidin) #1

Hey,
In the process of making my next competition map (expect a long stream of betas to begin within a week :p). Its called crevasse.

I want to include a trickjump here…

Bouncing off a rock or a tree stump or whatever, the jump should be quite difficult.
I’m not sure what the best way to design a trickjump is…

Perhaps someone with some experience making those gamma jump maps could give me some tips?

well i can tell you there aint no way your gona make a trick jump over that gap in one jump

you trickjump by jumping down a a few units in height and this allows you to jump as soon as you hit the groud so you get almost 0 friction slowing yiou down. the other half of trickjumping is turning your mouse so you gain speed with every jump, so u basicly keep speeding up

when you jump if you land on a plane sloping down you covert a lot of momentum going upwards to going forwards, likewise if you hit a slope sloping up you lose a lot of forward momentum and shoot upwards

if you removed you hill, and palced two colums over your jump, make the slope down slightly in the direction of your jump a player could get a lot of moentum when falling down here. then if you have an upwards facing slope at the side of your building a player could covert this momentum to height to get up the wall

but a jump where you convert forwards momentum to height is a bit harder than standard trick jumps

well i cant really tell from your picture but the distance seems quite large… if you want something that bounces you up, it’s certainly possible, but expect the second jump to be way shorter (but higher) than the first jump

alot of things allow you to bounce upwards, and i don’t know which is the best… often used are these:

______/ (but have the “/” part slightly more flat, sorry couldnt be arsed to make a picture :stuck_out_tongue: )

or even:

_______\ (same as above, slight more flat)

(note that you don’t have to make this out of concrete or anything, it can be “hidden” in a rock… most rocks in supplydepot allow you to bounce on them for example, simply because the faces of the rock are positioned in the right way)

dont make the / and \ bounce thingies too high… about 1/4 player height should be enough.

Also note that players will need quite alot of speed to bounce really high, which cannot be done by a single strafejump… you could make some flat flight of stairs before that hole to give players more speed to do this… (stairs work well as a gamma type of jump without it being too obvious)

but anyway, i dont really like the idea about adding trickjumps to your map… they ruin the fun of trickjumping, which is to find a jump that wasn’t intended to be done. If it was intended to be a trickjump it ruins the fun to do it and also the surprise for the other team, it will be just another route to your objective, but only for experienced trickjumpers…

Go as far as you can jump, to the left. Then place two crates there, towards the house (ontop of each other). From the looks of it, probably around that bush on the left. And then some other stoff a further 5 m away. Then the player will trickjump to the crates and then quickly take a few steps and do a simple jump over those 5 m to that other stuff (some electrical thingy?). From that, there is a plank/board to the roof of the building. tadaa! You have created an interstesting path for the good players.
