bsp to map?

(Boleth) #1

Is it possible to get the .map file from the .bsp?
I sent someone a bsp of my map to try out and then reformatted (I backed up my files but through complicated circumstances I lost the data). Ive managed to get the .bsp of the map (which is not completed) but dont have the .map .
So… is it possible?

Search Is your friend. :bored:

Btw: q3map2 does the job.

(BXpress) #3

well, if you search for it, you will find out that bsp to map is a not likely seen progress.

“bsp to map is a not likely seen progress.”

Eh?
What does that mean? you cannot do it? or you can?

(Orange) #5

Basicly, you can.
But some data will be lost and you probably won’t be able to recompile it.
From my understanding, people decompile bsp(s) just to have some visual reference when there is no way to recover the map.

BXpress is saying that it is not preferrable to decompile maps from bsp fileformat because there has been lot of incidents where other peoples work has been ripped wihout asking and/or crediting.

I actually have all the official maps decompiled for reference and texture usage. by texture usage I mean I have easier to copy texture usage of official maps.

(Boleth) #9

how do I do it?
Ive tried opening it with winrar but I just get a load of computer code.
Ive also tried changing the extension to .map but radiant just crashed on me.

(Malverik) #10

there was already many threads on that, its called decompiling the .bsp into a .map
Like thegnat said earlier, q3map2 is required for that.

(Boleth) #11

I strongly recommend you use google with the keyword q3map2 and maybe another keyword called download…

But please if you de-compile maps.
Don’t rip parts of. And tell that these are yours.

There’s a much easier way.
Look at Maps of which the source codes are released.
Or just ask authors of maps if you can use parts or how they have done specific things.

And if you take parts of maps that are not yours credit the authors.

ok
Im back again, tonight I finally downloaded q3map2, all was well then I ran q3map2 bam hit my first brick wall of the night. didnt know how to use it, got a DOS box with an error message. So I searched for a tutorial on how to decompile .bsp with q3map2 and turned up nothing useful. searched these forums, nothing. So I went on to google “.bsp converted to .map” and found a new program which sounded much easier to use! WinBSP. found the download, got it yay me told it to decompile my .bsp bang another brick wall.
“Unknown BSP format IBSP, version 47
GetLastError() = 0”
searched google again turned up nothing.
I apologize for my previous laziness in asking questions I could have found elsewhere, Ive been dormant in all forums for a few months and it hasnt done me much good. sorry again.
Could anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial to decompiling .bsp files in either WinBSP or q3map2?
Id really appreciate it as I dont really know what to do next and google isnt turning much up.

P.S. I wouldnt dream of stealing someone elses work, Im not a theif, I never have been or will I ever be. (I when I was 6 years old I stole a peanut from a market stall and as soon as I left the stall I knew I shouldnt have done it, I felt guilty for about 4 years because of that.)
