Brushwork vs models ?

(Get_It) #1

Hi you all happy ppl!

Today when looking for a US Army Jeep to use in my map. I found 2 interesting ones, one that was prefab of a jeep made with brushwork and another one that was a model of one jeep, I’m with doubts with what of should I use, the problem is not about the visual of both jeeps, both are greet, but if I should use in my map the one thats in brushwork or the one that is a model. Also I have this doubt about barrels to use also in my map, in Goldrush the author used models + clips while other mappers use brushworks.

Is there any difference between using brushwork or models? If yes which the best one to use?

Thanks for your reply

With brushes (resp. brush meshes) you get problems when you start rotating things by a value not divisible by 90 - you usually get gaps.
This won’t happen with a model. The drawback of models are, that you must create them first (which is usually more complicated then making stuff out of brushes) and you have a limit (AFAIK max. 256 models).
PS: When you plan to use a modell from another mapper/modeller, you should ask the author first for permission.

Models are prefered for things that have a lot of small detail. There’s no limit for static models (misc_models) but there is a limit for dynamic models(misc_gamemodels) because they count towards the entity count for the map which is 512.
The only drawback of models is that some people find them harder to texture than brushes. If what you have is already textured then use the models instead of the brushes because it’s much easier to move around/rotate etc.

Thanks once again for your replys, you have been a great help.

About the permission from the author, no problem, I’ll email him.
