Brushes blinking in and out

(Lock Ness Monster) #1

OK, im started my official first map today if nothing goes wrong that is, and it has lol

Ive made a tower type building that is 3 floors and when u get to the top one, for some odd reason the wall wants to blink in and out, so does teh brushes that connect the wall to the roof. I dont know what could be doing it, but i do have a ladder that has a no draw brush facing that side, could that be the cause or is there something else that im missing.

AND yes i did do a brush clean up

It’s because there are two brushes in the same spot, it’s called Z-fighting.

(Lock Ness Monster) #3

umm ok, never heard of that one, what if there isnt 2 brushes in the same place though, cause i dont think i overlapped any

(Lock Ness Monster) #4

ok, my problem has gotten alittle worse, i noticed that when u take one step it turns invisible, but if u take a few more it becomes visible again. well i made a new map and made a mg tower in it, well when u start going up the ramp to it, the boxes turn invisible. When u build the tower, if u start to go up the ramp again, the tower turns invisible also. Then when u start to climb the ladder it will turn invisible also, its like if u get anywhere close to these 2, the mess up, anyone got an idea y they would be doing this  :banghead: :bash:

Maybe its a VIS issue, is the tower made of detail or structural brushes? If its structural, this can cause the VIS clipping-issues.
Turn it into detail and it should be visible the whole time when you are inside the surrounding VIS node.

umm ok… how do i check if its detial or structural, andc what is VIS. Sorry but i havent got that far yet in mapping terms

Try Plugins -> Bobtoolz -> Brush Cleanup. The wall will either be selected or deleted afterwards if it was broken.

As for structural/detail, press Ctrl+D to filter out detailed brushes. VIS is how the game decides what to draw.

This thread might help you understanding what VIS is and what structural/detail brushes have to do with ist. It contains some good links to tutorials: VIS + Structural and Detail Brushes - help!

i dont know if it deals with the structural and detail brushes now or not. I noticed that everything thurns invisible, including the .md3’s

I had same problem some time ago…

Basically the brush was just borked. I remade those brushes and it all worked.

If everything turns invisible, not only a single brush, its obviosly a VIS issue. There is one structural brush(or more) that creates a BSP split and causes the engine to “think” the surrounding VIS-node isn’t visible - therefor its not drawn.
Check kommandos 1944_nordwind, if you spectate around close on the top of the skybox, you can see geometry popping in and popping out. Caulk brushes (structural) cause BSP splits, but are see-through. The engine decides that you can’t see whats behind - but you actually could see it, if it was drawn. :weird:
