Thanks for the footage, TAW|Feanor.

This is obviously a very different (newer one assumes) build of the game. I hope that SD/Bethesda gives us some direct-feed footage as well.

The HUD is full of info now. My impressions off that video are that it matches the art style of Team Fortress 2, with its big plus signs, bold color, easy-to-see, icons and alerts. I was hoping for something a little more subtle, maybe even just an increase in transparency.

On second viewing I realize that the actual gameplay HUD isn’t so different from any other shooter HUD. Splash Damage is facing an incredible challenge because Olivier was right. Putting a HUD in that game is like putting Post-its on the Mona Lisa. Ultimately, whatever they do, after a couple of hours of gaming and getting used to it, I probably won’t care.

Gunplay looks great!

The damage indication thingy looks more MW2ish this time.

The enemy’s HP levels are shown in a yellow/orange bar.

We get to see the self revive in action, too bad the guy playing is terrible as he died straight afterwards :frowning:

As for the actual action, its pretty much an exact replica of one of the Quakecon booth vids, where he uses SMART to take a side route and camps.

Thanks for the vid.

Anyone else feels sick when it comes to play with game showing a blurry/gray image when you are low on health? Fuc(k yeah, another COD-like feature which should stay on COD games only…

(BomBaKlaK) #25

Yeah the gray bluriness is not really a good idea for me !!
I dont like it ! hope we can desactivate this “gadget” feature !

I like visual queues, in MW2 the blood and low contrast view means i know there and then that im low on health and should get to cover ASAP. Many times i’ve ran head first into a battle in QL and died because i wasn’t immediately aware that i had really low health. As long as it isn’t detrimental to the view then I see no problem with it.

(LyndonL) #27

Blurring would be ok, but subtly going red: I’m not a fan. I never know I’m on the edge of dying in BFBC2 when the screen goes red… Stupid colourblindness.

(potkettleblack) #28

In games such as BC2/MW2 I can understand the need for it.
However in games that have a health bar, I dont see the need.

I got a chance to play it today, and I was really impressed. Unfortunately my station crashed a few seconds into the game, right as I accessed the computer to switch classes.

Overall though, it was intense and a lot of fun. The controls felt very solid. There’s a lot to the game that can’t really be grasped after one frantic play through. During the couple matches I got to see before my turn, hardly anyone learned how to slide, which become very useful (obviously) for any class that had to give something (ammo/health) to something or someone.

And it wasn’t hard to notice that I was low on health after I had gotten used to the game. But up until that point, I was usually on the verge of death and the guy had to poke me and suggest I healed myself.

The graphics are as clean as they’ve alway looked, it was really impressive.

It just means that when you are on a duel, once you reach low hp you won’t be able to aim since you can’t see a **** and dies right after it…

There’s blood all over the place and as far as I know you can’t even disable it. I’m fine with most ways of showing damage done to you as long as it’s optional.

(tokamak) #32

You don’t need to be colourblind not to like the red. It’s over the top and ridiculous. The desaturated blurs however, are fine, people who had proper concussions can tell you that.

(Seyu) #33

Yea, and it seems they’ll be displaying the enemy’s health bar too.

(tokamak) #34

I don’t like that. I hoped for TF2’s (subtle) gore to display how much an opponent is wounded.

(DarkangelUK) #35

Well yes MW2 does seem to go a bit overboard with the visual feedback, maybe something a little less… in your face.

(3Suns) #36

My impression has been that upon injury, the various forms of red on your screen (in numerous games) are there not only to indicate the critical health depletion, but also to visually handicap the person for taking so much damage: like giving the person a limp for getting shot in the leg. It is a minimal penalty/handicap for being taking so much damage in the first place. I have never had a problem with it.

I think that getting shot to pieces and still functioning at 100% is ridiculous and belongs in Mario games.

While I am not arguing for the manner in which it is done, I consider the ever so mild temporary visual penalty for taking considerable damage to be an advancement in the genre. Health bars are for fighting games and platformers, imo.

(shirosae) #37

So you can’t rely on movement skills (or SMART) to get you out of dangerous situations because you can’t see anything when you need it (hopefully you can still hear stuff unlike BC2), and so it ends up being much more effective to keep yourself near/behind cover at all times and lean out.

For a game that keeps talking about freedom of movement, there certainly seems to be a massive weighting towards turtling in Brink.

(Mustkunstn1k) #38

I really do hope we can customize our HUD like for example Enemy Territory. Even TF2 has a smaller HUD version (talking about the icons atm).

(tokamak) #39

I like that. SMART can also be seen as a way to get yourself in the best positions.

More footage??
