Brink vs ETQW: A comparison

ETQW = a PC game

Brink = an obvious Xbox360 port

Setting and style yes, mechanics - absolutely not  The core mechanics in Brink are not only similar to ET:QW, but are still a continuation of W:ET - just as ET:QW was. There are differences sure, but most of them are quite subtle - and most of them are the worse for being changed, IMO. In truth, Brink shares a huge amount of mechanical similarity with ET:QW - that’s why many of us are here, hoping for as much of ET:QW to survive as possible. As I mentioned before, I don’t think many people expected ET:QW 2 - but it’s quite surprising that some of the mechanics that worked so well in ET:QW, have been ruined in Brink. The fact that some of these decisions were made to keep the 3 platforms somewhat equal, is the icing on the not-so-tasty cake.

Sad, but true. And very succinctly put  lol

ETQW is awesome.

the only one problem with it - ****ty netcode
lags are terrible, with all these freezes and microstutters

BRINK is the same **** on this point bro (sometimes it’s even worse).

(dazman76) #25

I played plenty of lag-free ET:QW games - as long as the server and your net connection are up to the job, you should have no lag playing ET:QW.

(ironSightSensitivity) #26

it’s different. in brink you kinda teleport back and forth,
while in etqw you stuck in the mid of jump and cant move mouse

so i prefer brink lags… but everything else - i’d prefer etqw

Like so?

I knew from the moment I saw the first customisation videos it would make class recognition impossible, it’s a shame it also makes team recognition hard, if you’re playing security you sometimes get a team mate dressed in something a bit redish and when they run at you from a corner I tend to shoot because it can look like the red tint at first glance only to find out he was taking cover from a firefight and I just finished him off for the enemy.

Good post, Vert.

Not having the time to sit in front of my monitor as much as I used to, I choose the game(s) I want to play very carefully.

As it stands, the drive I have to play ET:QW is well above that to play Brink. In my view, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars is a superior game in nearly every way.

For the memories, since you mention the shotgun post 1.2 patch:

Come on, everybody complained about the lag on ET:QW.

In fact, the lag was mainly the thing who decided who wins a duel in ET:QW. I, and mainly players, left ET:QW for this exact reason.

To put it bluntly, and to state the obvious… etqw destroys brink on every level, both literally and metaphorically. They boasted about all the new talent they hired, yet when push comes to shove, it doesnt actually show. If I didnt know the release date of either game, and you were to ask me - which game was released in 2007, I would say Brink has the most dated feel.

hell yeah, dude your hairs on fire

In my opinion I love both ETQW and Brink for their own reasons. Although Brink is clearly suffering more performance/lag wise (dropping at 10-20 FPS with a decent card for me) than ETQW did. Which is a big shame.

Ditto. I am of the opinion that it has to do with idtech 4. While it served its purpose for Doom 3 in Singleplayer, I felt that multiplayer wise it was a step backwards from idtech 3 for a multitude of reasons. :frowning:

'sup Vert.

The way I see it, ETQW was a fairly traditional shooter that provided solid shooting mechanics, as a good FPS should. It was up to the players/clans to bring tactics and teamplay. In Brink, it almost feels like the other way around: the game provides you with all the objectives and teamplay (buffing, escorting, etc.), but it doesn’t provide anything for the core FPS gamer. I know Brink isn’t about shooting per se, but it’s still an FPS, so I want to know I’m improving on my shooting skills as well. And with generic weaponry, the weapon spread Verticae complained about and the lack of a K/D monitor, that’s almost impossible. And I totally agree with Vert about the design being too messy. Especially when you have multiple nametags/healthbars/ammobars flying around, along with the bright lines around objectives, I sometimes just can’t see what the hell is going on. Not because the action is chaotic, but because the game’s interface is being a bitch. And that’s a bad thing.

So yea, it’s no surprise that players with a classical FPS background, like Vert and myself, find Brink disappointing compared to SD’s previous games.

This doesn’t mean Brink isn’t fun, by the way. I personally love the SMART system and the character customization. It’s a great game for casual playing.
Because I’m used to holding the sprint key, and I can’t get out of the habit - I found toggle switches for crouch and iron sights, but not for sprint. Also, I’d much rather decide (by pressing either crouch or jump) when I want to use SMART - I really don’t get any benefit from having it activate automatically. In fact, it causes me quite a bit of trouble  Especially accidental sliding when I wanted crouch, or attempting to mount the sides of stairs when I just wanted to sprint. Nice for controllers, pretty pointless for keyboard users. I also don’t like “you sprint till you stop” controls - clunky, and most games do not take that approach.

You have to remember, I’m a PC player - having more than one “anything” on a single key, makes no sense for me - I’ve never liked it in any game that used that approach, and I don’t think I ever will. It should have been optional - those who like single use and single SMART keys could have them, whereas those who like to bind specific keys could also do that. I’m far better at juggling multiple keys, than I am at remembering not to hold something down because it has dual functions

EDIT: In fact, I would go as far as saying that SMART is simply a pointless marketing mechanism  You can do everything that SMART does by simply using crouch and jump at the right times - therefore, it’s not a requirement when playing with keyboard and mouse. I’ve been jumping and crouching for years, waiting for a game that allowed me to slide and scale things - now I have it, the damn thing tries to do it for me - not cool :)
have you missed the fact that either holding your sprint key or holding the jump key is what makes you do " automatic undesired" moves?

Also, I’d much rather decide (by pressing either crouch or jump) when I want to use SMART - I really don’t get any benefit from having it activate automatically. In fact, it causes me quite a bit of trouble

Thats where a brain and coordination comes into play. Not holding your keys is not hard, just need to adapt a little so your muscle memory starts losing its hold habits. So repeat after me: Tap or Hold. Tap = no smart, hold = smart.

So IT is already optional. Had trouble at first, now its in TF2 i got trouble not tapping my sprint key ( theres no sprint in TF2…). Why having key to activate smart? like bullet time in Maxpayne? SD wanted it to be more natural, and im starting to get it. Also every moves can be made manually with crouchs, sprints and jump and climb. At worst, maybe an option yes or no to activate the smart by hold keys or doing all the moves manually, no assistance at all.

+1 on what Vert said.

You honestly never rubber-banded in QW? That **** was horrible.

(Fatfool) #37

I don’t agree with the comment about ETQW’s Grenades and Vehicles though. I played the game because of those. I didn’t like the twitch shooter aspect of first person shooters like CS and that’s why I played Wolf ET and ETQW. Predictably, my favourite class was the field ops where you know… you can actually kill stuff without shooting.
