Brink UI change - Which is the final UI?

(PopeTackler) #1

I’ve seen quite a few videos and there have been two distinct UIs in the game: one which has very clean white elements (health bar, etc.) and the other which definitely seems a bit dated, characterised by quite dirty colour tones, especially in the objective wheel.

Which of these two is the final UI? It’s not always easy to tell by the date of the videos since some are mid-2010 with the clean UI and some are beginning of 2011 with the older looking UI.

Example 1 - Clean lines, big visible buttons. Reminds me of Mirror’s Edge.

Example 2 - Obviously a demo but it shows the UI elements that I was talking about as the “older” example.

uuuh, ex.2 is a UI from back when i joined the forums… almost a year ago.
so familiarize yourself with ex.1

(PopeTackler) #3

Good stuff. I figured that would be the final… but it wasn’t easy to tell from some video dates.

(madoule) #4

yeah, can be tricky… you never know. never trust youtube. you can see and download the vids in HD and chronological order over at www.brinkthegame.com

Brilliant, cheers.

I wish they didn’t use numbers as a hit indicator.
Hopefully it can be disabled or tweaked.

(brbrbr) #7

sadly final UI not skinnable/extensible is i hope initially. so, you can’t turn Brink into something… new.
same was about characters customization - no serious characters models tweaking allowed[during char creation/customization], just basic re-skinning.
but thats allow re-use content in “consoles” i guess.

They most definately will.

That’ll be one of first things I do after I play through some matches with the bots and mess around a little with the customization. That first thing being messing around with the HUD to perfect it. Removing anything I don’t need.

(DouglasDanger) #10

I’m sure the designers haven’t figured out what is important or not important with the HUD already, they just took every piece of info they could imagine, including local time and weather and phase of the moon, and put it on there.

(H0RSE) #11

It’s a good chance that HUD customization, will only be achievable on PC.

So what happened to the incredibly good looking brink we’ve seen in 09?

that second video was the reason I started to follow brink, and it looks way better than any recent footage.
It surely cant just be because of the lack of HUD…
It just looks much much better, the difference is huge.

Can it be that they had to downscale it alot?
I mean, back in 09 this was probably just a pre pre alpha build and developement for the consoles hasnt started yet.
Maybe it wasnt realizeable on consoles with those graphics…
back then there were also rumours about splash damage beeing unable to get a steady framerate… so that just strengthens this theory…

(kilL_888) #13

yes, it can. thats at least my experience.

without hud elements you can concentrate on the actual graphics and not some 2d numbers.

but i wouldnt say it looks better in 09. there is no real difference. its just that in newer builds theres a lot of hud elements that distract from the rest of the game.

in 09 i think there might be more motion blur in there, but i wouldnt bet on it. i personally think motion blur, depth of field and hdr add a LOT to a game. others find it more distracting though.

anyways. go ahead and try for yourself. few weeks ago i tried some console commands for crysis2, just for fun. i disabled the hud completely. and subjectivly i found the game looked even better. even though there wasnt a real difference of course.

so. i mentioned that a couple of times here, but i do it again. i hope i can costumize the hud in brink and configure it to the absolute minimum. maybe a crosshair is enough once i know the maps, i dont know.

(beute) #14

I never said the lack of HUD cant improve the looks, I said JUST the lack of HUD cant account for such a huge difference.

They clearly changed things, I mean, we have many videos where the HUD was completely or partialy disabled and it still looked bad compared to the old footage.

The HUD clearly distracts and I will certainly disable few useless elements of it, but it isnt the sole reason for the visuals to take such a huge hit in terms of quality.

(mkkid28) #15

I don’t think the container city demo video looks any better gameplay wise then the newer videos.

(beute) #16

no one said anything about that.

Im purely talking about aesthetics.

Im not alone on this one, many brink “followers” mentioned the same thing in different forums.
mainly the ones that arent as hardcore and just dont visit these forums.

there were several posts on the gametrailers forums alone that mentioned the same decline in graphical quality.
The presentation of the older container city videos is just sooooo much better, even the sound is better, apart from the repetitiveness…(they had like 1 “death” sound or so back then :D)

I really hope we will be able to recreate the presentation atleast on the PC… with different cvars/configs and such things.

Balls. :(:frowning:

(TuggyTug) #18

Are the newer videos on Xbox 360 and the old videos on PC?

(riptide) #19

I believe that was the theory yes.

(BioSnark) #20

Still looking forward to seeing how the hud interface and customization shapes up on the pc platform. I guess this isn’t being shown till release which is usually a bad sign. Still, it’ll almost certainly have some customization in terms of opacity if nothing else via autoexec and developer console.

I miss being really excited about Brink… about a year ago, I think it was :frowning:
