Brink: Steam & Anticheat

(Voxie) #21

The problems you’re describing, aimology (CoD4 not working, patches being delayed), are due to poor implementation of the Steam framework. When it comes to patches, especially regarding Steam exclusive games, Steam (and other delivery platforms) are flat-out awesome. Being able to instantly patch your games gives developers the ability to frequently release small updates and quickly hotfix them, should any bugs emerge (and they always do, no matter how much you bug-test :)).

It also makes the installation much easier. Installing CoD: WaW is a two-click process on Steam, whereas with the retail version you got to insert the disc, enter your CD-key, install the game, install patch 1.2, install patch 1.4, install patch 1.5, install patch 1.6 and finally install patch 1.7. You also, of course, have to manually download all those patches.

I would like BRINK to have a custom anti-cheat, when it detects a cheater it makes them automatically donate 10$ to tapir aid, then you screen starts flashing in rainbow colors, and a unicorn runs across it.
As he is galloping graciously he says “cheating is bad mke”.

but seriously all anti-cheat is bypassable some how, so it doesn’t really matter. (I vote PB or VAC though)
And steam is a fine distributing system etc… But I like to have a hard copy

(Susefreak) #23

I’m still going for PB, since that is known to be cross-platform.

Plus looking back on the idTech4 based games, it’ll be PB since all the games based on the engine had PB

NO STEAM…

In my Clan we are all haters of the STEAM SYSTEM
For the following reasons:

  1. Steam knows what are you playing and when and the hosters can create statistics about you…

  2. VAC sucks … i have seen cheaters in CS CSS COD and so on. … no way…b.t.w. Punkbuster for me as serveradmin its more comfortable.

  3. Fu**** advertising in Steam … hey i pay for a game and i don´t want be be bothered by advertising at all.

  4. AntiCheat … nice try but is that realy possible?

  5. AND STEAM DOES NOT SUPPORT LINUX !!!

Thats our opinion…

lol u mad?

Not denying just saying that peak/total players per day aren’t necessarily indicative of what games an individual gamer plays. I often play L4D1 and L4D2 on the same day. And again I expect CS players who would have left did so some time ago.

MMmm okay. If it’s Steam only then you won’t get the disparity between a developer/publisher release and a Steam packaged one. Also the Steam platform means everyone gets the patches and as often as the developer likes to release them. None of this silly wait 3 months to bundle everything into a nice big patch.

Steam can be compulsory and still sell in retail where I’d wager a lot of people don’t give a thought about DRM or Steam being installed.

And being banned on steam means nothing. You are permanent banned when you buy the game off steam also, so that theory makes no sense. Its called banned by “cdkey” steam you just get a new “steam account” not hard…

If you like creating new, seperate accounts for each game you buy sure. I have a healthy Steam collection going so have a financial interest in not hacking as well as a moral one. As Voxie said, there is also the social factor of hopping from account to account.

Also some people ( like myself ) hates having to have steam running in the background when gaming because it uses up more resources

This always makes me laugh. You have a gaming rig that’s put down on it’s knee by running Steam? Perhaps you need to upgrade or lay off the weak sauce.

Why would I install another third party program when I can go outside (yeah I know its kinda hard for some of you…) and buy the actual game with a nice box etc?

Steam exclusive = you lost many buyers, including me, I dont “hate” steam, I just dislike it, but the fact I cant choose beetween a third party vs an actual game = fail IMO. Plus each time I used steam its damn slow/buggy and full of advertisments, kthxbye to me…

Peace

Yeah I agree with this, I don’t mind steam selling the game but I want the option to go buy a physical copy of the game.

(SockDog) #29

Where are these Steam advertisements people keep talking about?

(brbrbr) #30

What is Steam btw ?
i know those street dealers keep advertise things, called “speed” or"bloom" or … etc…, but never heard of such thing on market.

(Senethro) #31

You might think this if you weren’t a regular user of Steam. If you were to open Steam once every two weeks you’d get one window with 10 pages on it. You’re not forced to view all 10 pages, you can close the window with no problems, but its still ADVERTIZIN. deys tryna control ur mahnd

Thats good English, unfortunately I don’t understand your analogy.

(stealth6) #32

only downside I can see so far with steam is:

  • Doesn’t work on linux
  • The advertisement window that pops up

I get the joke after the question, but in the event that you are asking the question seriously, here is STEAM.

@Apple I understand the desire to get physical copies, but since all of them are laced with all sorts of nasty DRM, rootkits, and crazy long serial number crap, and almost all games nowadays require an internet verification anyway, I would rather just go with Steam. I can install it on as many computers as I like and can even go to a friends house and install it there an let him try it. Almost all physical copy games nowadays have very limiting install restrictions. It just isn’t worth it for me. (Also, there are some crazy deals on Steam that you couldn’t find in the oldest and dirtiest of bargain bins.)

(Voxie) #34

To get rid of the “advertisement”, go to File > Settings > Interface > Uncheck “Notify me (with Steam instant messages) about additions or changes to my games, new releases, and upcoming releases”.

(needforWeed) #35

I love Steam! Good to keep an eye on whats on the market + Steam has lots of price cuts. Hey I got Mass Effect for 3,99 € or something!

(Jamieson) #36

I know people who will be playing on Linux so I think it would be a mistake to exclude this portion of the market.

You can have most of the benefits of digitial distribution by selling Brink through steam whilst not pissing people off by making it exclusive to steam.

(SockDog) #37

You mean people are griping about something that doesn’t actually affect them. Next they’ll be saying their monster gaming rigs are brought to their knees by running one app in the background.

It’s not a question of distribution, even valve doesn’t make their games only available through steam. What will tie the game to Steam is IF SD decide to use Steamworks for the game’s backend (as a PC replacement for Live and PSN). Then you will have to install Steam (although I’d love to hear otherwise) and they may as well use the Steam DRM and everything else while they’re there.

Perhaps you should consider it this way. If it wasn’t Steam, it’d be GFWL. If they are releasing on 360 and PSN with existing backends why would they exert energy making a whole new PC backend rather than grab one off the shelf. This seems to be another economic development decision. Personally I’m glad it’s Steam being considered over GFWL.

Edit: Maybe the above doesn’t make sense. What I trying to get at is the Steamworks functions are more likely to need Steam installed than some distribution boner Bethesda has with Valve to force everyone to use it for DRM purposes. The latter probably occurs only because of a decision to use the former.

Unless of course you can have Steamworks outside of Steam but I’m not so sure about that.

(Nail) #38

it’s also a hassle for lan games, just not worth it
as an option, I say yes, as exclusive, no

[QUOTE=Nail;212573]it’s also a hassle for lan games, just not worth it

Are you implying that a LAN, a gathering of technophiles, will somehow not have an internet connection?

(Nail) #40

our lans are a gathering of drunks and bbq eaters who like to play a few games, the location doesn’t lend itself to easy access to interwebs
