BRINK on the PS3, Tell me your experience

(TrueCoolGuy) #1

I’ll Keep it short and simple, If its long, plz read it anyway, you’ll be helping a guy out

Hey, I haven’t bought BRINK yet cuz of my college exams but will soon buy it, along with L.A. Noire
I have been coming to the forums to see if the game is worth it or not, I personally loved BRINK but I soon started to doubt if it was worth it, after seeing it had some AI problems, Lag, Lack of proper multiplayer lobby, Campaign is just multiplayer with cutscenes, etc.

All of this kinda reminds me of KillZone 3, It had a horrible start with multiple problems and promised to fix them but in the end, took too much time and ppl moved on (I was one of them), The devs were also active in their forums, like they are here, yet they still kinda failed.

I just wanna know if there are any dedicated servers or if you have no bullet lag, if the game doesn’t lag. If there are any over-powered stuff that ppl keep using (I hate that). You know, just anything that might help my choice. Thank You very much (In Advance) for your time

PS. I’ll be buying it in about 2 weeks, so I’ll check out the patches

I’m loving it on PS3. Let me list some pro’s and con’s:

+Great graphics
+Nice customisation
+AI solid on defence
+Great feeling to the weapons
+Usually something new to find in maps
+No lag (in my experience)
+Entices teamwork out of random players
+Better than your average FPS terrain movement
+Great balancing

-Texture streaming delayed at times - could be improved by installing to hard disk probably
-AI is terrible on attack - too distracted with other objectives, fragmented
-Defending is (as usual) easier than attack, so equally matched teams struggle on attack
-It can be too easy for defence to undo attack’s progress in hacking/carrying
-The community is quite small

I would agree with all those points apart from lag - I have an average connection 8 down / 1 up (in UK) and don’t lag in other games. For me about 1 in 2 matches have terrible lag, but maybe SD will find a cause and patch it soon

Yeah I specified in my experience because I’m sure there are people with lag problems. In my general experience (in the UK), lag dies down as the evening wears on. I mostly play from 9pm until 12 or 1, so they will be best for lag free times. I can’t testify to the situation on weekend afternoons or early evenings when I imagine it would be a lot worse.

But to be fair to Splash Damage, that’s an infrastructure thing, not a software thing. Sure, good netcode can mitigate network load to a degree, but there’s only so much can be done. Coupled with the fact that a large proportion of consoles gamers have no idea about DMZs and firewalls/ports…

Yes true, lag on consoles will always be there one way or another - I think brink struggles either because it chooses hosts poorly or perhaps it’s sending more data than games like COD or Killzone. All I know is that when there is lag I have to find another match - it’s literally unplayable, without the lag it’s awesome

BUMP to see some more insight from other ppl, thnx for your thoughts guys

I’m loving it due to the game being different from the other fps, but where are the ps3 ppl? i’m always playing with the same bunch of randoms. I’ve only had lag a handfull of times at the beginning of games but it tends to settle down after 30 seconds or so.

Playing it alone is not a fun experience, it really does need to be played online.

To that point, I’ve never had an 8 vs 8 with all humans. At most, I’ve had 6-7 actual people in the game, and the rest of the slots were filled with bots. I don’t really care for that, surely there’s enough other people with decent connection I can join?

In games where I do get 5-6 people, it does tend to rubberband/lag a bit more than it should. I never lag in other games, have my DMZ set, and plugged directly to my router. But I do in Brink at times.

Currently there are a lot of medics because they gain 75 XP for healing people whether they were down 1 pip or 5 pips. They also get 75 XP for throwing revive syringes, and another 100 XP if the person uses it to revive themselves. Their ability to buff themselves, and transfer supplies to other teammates, makes them overpowered in some peoples’ eyes. I haven’t used them because there always seems to be a surplus of them on every team I’m on, so I can’t say whether that’s true or not.

Miniguns/Gatling guns are underpowered currently due to crazy recoil and inability to kill effectively with them. SMGs tend to be the favorites, with ARs a close 2nd. I personally use an SMG most of the time because it’s the best balance between close quarters, reload speed, and decent range in bursts, so they may have too many advantages to the AR currently.

The maps currently can get a bit repetitive, because each map has you doing the same objective on it. So every time you go to a place, you’ll be doing the same thing, in the same order. Hopefully this gets varied up a bit in the DLC/patches to come.

It sounds like I’m feeling negative towards the game, but it has it’s good points. It has a ton of potential I think, it just hasn’t unlocked it yet in my opinion. I still have it, still play it nightly, but it’s getting hard. And I’m close to trading it in. Hopefully SD comes out with something soon.
