Idtech4 - old engine.
There is a limit to how much you can improve the graphics
with that old engine.
That’s why it’s weired that the minimum CPU requirements for Brink
are to high for this old engine (my guess console port).
I’m waiting for the usa guys to start playing it on PC tomorrow
and report back about pc performance and options.
Rage is coming out on september and it uses idtech5.
Believe me you’ll see a huge graphic differences even on your old console.
I have too agree…
From reports I have read there does seem to be some ‘issues’ with the graphics for brink running on the consoles (we wait to see the PC version) which seem to be more engine based than console power based.
As the Idtech4 engine used is a modified version of the engine used for Doom 3 on the Xbox (I said Xbox not 360) which was released in 2005 it might explain why the console versions are not looking cutting edge.
I do hope any issues can be resolved with patches in the future and hope this does not impede on anyone’s enjoyment of the game or review scores.
If issues can’t be resolved I feel Splash Damage are going to have tough questions to answer;
-
Why the release of the back was not posponed until the issues were resolved?
-
When they were aware the engine was not fit for purpose?
-
Was there anything they could have done about it?
-
If they concentrated on just one platform would these graphical issues been avoided as Splash Damage are a small developer producing a game of three platforms simultaneously?
-
Why was production not halted and moved over to the Idtech5 engine?
We wait to see what the PC version will run/look like but as we have had not confirmed footage as of yet (with less than a day before release!) I have a slight sinking feeling in my stomach we are in for surprise.
Time will tell if the actual game play is up to par with other Splash Damage titles of the past as this will take a few days/weeks of actual game play for the meta-game to become apparent.
Fingers crossed everyone that this has all been a slight glitch in the system and great things are to come.
John Carmack made the comment that id had worked hard on reducing the size of Rage, because Microsoft “want more money for each additional disc in the box”.
