Brink is This Month's PC Zone UK Cover
So also introducing the notion that you can accidentally kill your own teammates and become a hated bastard doesn’t help make the situation any more inviting :)
I agree. That should be much more of an issue than getting griefed by other players! The first teamkills in a new game are always very shameful.

I hope we will see hints in the loading screen of maps again. One may state that not all servers have friendly fire enabled.

(Floris) #62

Sounds Company of Heroes’ish - love that game! BRINK is looking more exciting by the day

Just don’t use a ‘fire back’ setting where you absorb the damage you deal to teammates. I hate it when some nuthead runs into your grenade which gets yourself killed.
Don’t know what game it was that had it, but it was rubbish.

(darthmob) #64

I’m pretty sure it’s called damage reflection in Call of Duty. It’s nice in theory but in reality it always gets me into a rage. It keeps you from shooting your teammates but it doesn’t stop them from running into your fire support / line of fire / grenade. This is especially frustrating in hardcore mode where 2 hits get you killed.

(tokamak) #65

Those are exactly the kind of measures that beg for grieving.

(DoubleDigit) #66

Speaking of which. Even after 2 years people don’t know there’s a mute locally list in Quake Wars. Can you make it less hidden away and even ask the player “Would you like to shut the mofo up for good?” Apart from the usual morons, there are those that sound like my boss giving orders around like it’s a freaking job not a game.

(tokamak) #67

That’s already solved, VOIP only works for friends.

(Rahdo) #68

yup, though like FF, another server setting it turning team VoiP back on…

(tokamak) #69

Is it also possible to simply set VOIP receivable from all players by yourself?

(Cankor) #70

The FF thing I’m torn on. There really wasn’t much griefing in ETQW, but maybe that was because of the smaller population. For all intents and purposes it’s non-existent right now. But back in the day it happened a couple of times.

The thing about FF off is it teaches people to shoot and throw grenades around without caring, and those habits are hard to break when they join a server with FF on. But I suppose that’s better than chasing players who are new to online gaming away, they will figure it out after they join the servers, or it will be “explained” to them.

The thing about FF off is it teaches people to shoot and throw grenades around without caring,
But do they really have to care? The FF is off…if a player is playing on a FF off server, there’s a good chance he’s going to use it to his advantage, and although you may consider this cheesy or cheap, it’s not cheating. Besides, most of the time on FF off servers, I don’t have problems with people “exploiting” the game, so it’s not like FF off servers are going to absolutely horrid to play on, I mean how could they be…they can’t TK you.

and those habits are hard to break when they join a server with FF on…
You learn the difference between FF off and FF on fairly quick. It’s not like, “Aw man! I keep forgetting that my grenades will blow up my teammates…” you do it, you see what happens, you stop doing it. Also, if a FF off player is ready to ‘take the plunge’ and play with FF on, he knows what he’s getting into, and if he doesn’t like it, he’ll go back to FF off.

(Rahdo) #72

not quite, but you can specify people on your team do you want to listen to. and ergo, you could basically open channels to everyone on your team (though they’d have to opt in… that’s another thing i want to protect… a given player’s right to be shy not not feel obligated to talk to strangers… the game does all the talking for them)

(DoubleDigit) #73

Oh great, now nobody can hear me sing. Damn it.

Great thread!

I have a bunch of random comments to make, so please bear with me.

First, Friendly Fire ON all the way, baby! Wouldn’t play it any other way, but very glad to hear that the options are in the gamers’ hands. As for Infinity Ward’s method of dealing with griefers (i.e., kill the dude that done it), I think it is an elegant solution because it nullifies any joy that a griefer might have had, and yet the team properly loses a player for when it happened by non-griefer’s hand. When friendly-fire is on in any game, I am always very careful where I shoot and where I throw my 'nades, and try to call them out before I do. Regardless of how SD handles this, the good news is that we can turn it on or off. (Awesome nerd rage pic, Darthmob!)

Second, will the FF toggle be available to 360 gamers as well? I play with my sons and if Brink turns out to be even half as good as I anticipate, we will be buying 4 of those puppies. Splash Damage, please bring as much of the feature depth to the console version as you possibly can. Hide it deep in the menus away from noob hands, if you have to, but please don’t dumb it down.

Third, there is a GFW podcast that is a couple years old, but still provides an interesting look into the mind of Paul Wedgewood and the importance of execution over ideas (direct link to MP3). As someone who loves the Gears of War games, but is broken-hearted because of the lack of “execution” on the part of developer Epic, I just want to encourage Splash Damage to stick to their principles and provide a beta if necessary. I purchased 3 copies of Gears 2 launch day. I have since goozexed all of them because the game is unplayably broken, from netcoding to hit detection to broken animations. (I tried it again just last Friday on the prompting of a friend, and even with all the patches it is still a disaster.) I won’t be buying Gears 3 new. Gotta send a message to the Lambo owners. Burned once, shame on them. Burned twice, shame on me. Won’t be burned again. Execution over ideas indeed!

Fourth, my friend just watched those three Container gameplay vids in HD on his big screen (cable provider offered them or something). Anyway, he said the game was “sick” and “Killzone 2” beautiful. He is a PC gamer and though he can play Crysis maxed out, he thinks Killzone 2 for the PS3 is one of the prettiest games ever released. I have only watched the vids as Gametrailers has provided them, but I figured as much and have been sold on the art since the first screenshots. Great to hear that it is poetry in motion as well!

Cheers! (I like it in here!) :stroggtapir:

The griever can still work his way around by trying to get hurt from friendly fire and letting his teammates kill himself.

Here´s one I haven´t see anywhere yet:

Whenever a team-mate kills you, you can opt to make this guy skip one respawn.

Seems like the most sensible sanction you can give for it, not too harsh but harsh enough to make people care about their team-mates.

(DoubleDigit) #76

Making him go pink, 10 slaps air lift, stop his gun from shooting, always my favorites.

(light_sh4v0r) #77

Complain votes are also often unnecessary, but they have no effect unless you really get them often. They’re a great system, apart from the fact that the kick lasts 2 minutes.
If you consider having twice the respawn time for every uncalled for complaint filed, you might just change your mind Gorker

(.Chris.) #78

Brilliant idea yet again without thinking things through…

Just get bellends running into your nades or line of fire and complaining giving you longer respawn when it’s them in fault, that’s why you’ve never seen it used before.
