Brink is This Month's PC Zone UK Cover

(tokamak) #41

Well that might be the only plus about it, though I’m sure it could be solved otherwise.

(DoubleDigit) #42

How is that a plus, or are you too worried about your k/d ratio?

(DarkangelUK) #43

There’s a long discussion on this, search it out.
I guess it will be like quakewars without ff… horrific grenade spam :P
Depends on how many grenades people have in the first place…

(Shiv) #45

This was with 1 each. But i agree.

Its just that people are more likely to throw that one grenade when they arent likely to kill their own team. More grenades flying means more kills means more grenades
o stroyent grenades what fun we had :stuck_out_tongue:

(tokamak) #46

It’s not just grenade spam, not being able to hit team-mates results in weird tactical artefacts themselves. And also the other way around, a good player is able to use the opponent’s team-mates against them, like that bullet dodge scene in Watchmen.
In a game where friendly fire is turned off, you can just unload your clip vaguely at a target near a team-mate, but while it’s on these team-mates turn into human shields for the opponent.

(DarkangelUK) #47

Both have their good points and bad points. For me it’s not about which one i prefer, it’s about the one that has the least amount of idiots. Time will tell from the gameplay.

(light_sh4v0r) #48

If mines in ETQW would not teamkill… :o

(Rahdo) #49

Oh there’s no doubt that FF adds a lot to the game, when you’re not playing with anti-social morons. But the threat of them hurting the experience for first timers (who we’re actively trying to entice from solo play to online play) is just too great. Which is why a ‘standard’ game (i.e. the one if you just make the ‘I’d like to play the next mission please’ choice) has to have it turned off. I suspect most guys on this form won’t opt for that choice but instead will go for the ‘search for you own type of match’ choice, where they can filter to their heart’s content…

(darthmob) #50

I just hope that enough people will choose to play with friendly fire activated. Especially when you are playing a mode that is dependant on the matchmaking system (eg. online coop campaign).

In my experience the default settings seem to stick with most of the servers. Eg. in ET / ETQW more or less all the servers have FF on. In Call of Duty it’s the other way round (it is a default setting there, right?).

(Joe999) #51

is this with all weapons? it’s no fun when you can throw a grenade without 2nd thoughts into a firefight because you can expect that only the enemy gets hit. same for heavier weapons. when i think that i could fire the panzer into a bunch of dogfighting players in wolf:et, it certainly would have taken the fun out of the game

(tokamak) #52

What about a 50% (or any percentage according to balance) damage reduction from friendly fire? I’ve not seen any shooter experiment with a damage mitigation from team-mates. Although in COD singleplayer your team-NPCS’s are very resistant to your fire.

(Rahdo) #53

That strikes me as something we should do anyway for when FF is on. But even with something like that, it doesn’t prevent assholes from trying to ruin the game for others. And Brink is decidedly anti-asshole, out of the box…

(tokamak) #54

I know but turning it off just looks like a cop-out to me. There are numerous ways of dealing with grieving, sure, none of them are preventive measures, but this is stripping away a layer of tactical depth for the sake of preventing a few occurrences of prickage.

Disabling it also sends a message to the players of ‘you’re going to abuse it anyway’, you’re turning them into assholes out right and it stops people from being virtuous to their team. There’s a slight sense of fulfilment of not shooting that grenade on a couple of bad guys because a team-mate got too close to them.

I’ll definitely filter on FF, but I do hope you guys fully explore the implications of disabling it.

(DarkangelUK) #55

I’m sure SD will live with your disappointment, and I’m also sure there’s going to be a good mix of on and off servers, which over time will probably slowly swing towards on’s favour as people get used to the game.

(tokamak) #56

Just like I’m sure they value feedback before releasing a product.

(DarkangelUK) #57

Feedback based on common sense, they’ve ALWAYS said they want to appeal to new players so FF will be off by default… telling them it’s a cop-out isn’t gonna change that.

(tokamak) #58

And I’m arguing that even for beginners FF on is a good thing. What’s next, removing self-damage because otherwise beginners could hurt themselves? Stripping a game for convenience is generally a bad idea.

(DarkangelUK) #59

Why would you think that’s next? You’re quite the pessimist. All SD said was is that FF will be off… now you’re citing doom and destruction. Lot’s of games have FF off by default, but since this game has it, it’s the end of learning for all newbs? Jeez, drama queen much?

(Rahdo) #60

Yes it is losing some tactical depth, but I would argue it’s depth that a newb player isn’t ready to deal with anyway, even without the additional problem of assholes. It can be incredibly stressful trying to go online when you’re not used to everything, especially in an incredibly deep and face paced game like what we make. So also introducing the notion that you can accidentally kill your own teammates and become a hated bastard doesn’t help make the situation any more inviting

That’s a pretty subtle psychological message, I’d say, and it’s unfortunately shouted way out by either “HAHA! pwned!! **** u!” or “Goddamnit, who let the newb in, GTFO!”, which are much more common in a random FF on situation.

I’ll definitely filter on FF

and you won’t be alone, i’m fairly certain
