Brink is plenty of unfulfilled wishes.

i always dismiss stories in mp shooters. they only really work when they are minimal yet proactively cheese. i don’t want atmosphere in brink i want voice chat and vsays. i want player personality whether quips and taunts or compliments for shots well placed. i want servers to have distinct feels through the actions and efforts of that community’s regulars even if all servers run the same map. those types of things can be the saving grace to a game that cannot meet the dreamed up levels of its marketing.

smart system, though… makes all other fps feel antiquated, even etqw. it isn’t a perfect system but to me it is a fulfilled wish of brink. props to the guys an gals who designed and gave us smooth movement across random terrain!

While I do agree with your argument about the story, I would of loved it to be fleshed out more. It seemed an interesting premise that warranted a bit more time and could of given Brink a fully fledged sp campaign.

As for the rest of the review, I love Smart and think its well used and should be in ALL fps in some form or another.

Now it has a steep learning curve but that adds to the depth of the game imo, learning the map and classes takes time. However any idiot can join in as a medic or soldier and just buff their team and get along fine while being a useful cog in the the machine.

My only gripe is the lag and lack of a lobby, which hopefully SD can fix. Other than that I love Brink.

The atmosphere of BRINK is a very confusing matter.

I really, really, really love the architecture found in maps like Container City, Terminal, Aquarium, Resort and Reactor. It shows the many places of the Ark. Wonderful. Personally, I would’ve loved to see more Container City like maps. Y’know, get to see more of the Resistance.

But that there’s exactly the problem. They have the setting and they have the story. It just lacks explanation and depth! It all just feels rushed.
Where are the people of the Ark? What did the Ark (especially Container City) look like before the poop hit the peddles. Many of these could’ve been fulfilled by adding a concept art section to the game. Showing the many faces and places of the Ark. Rather than some stupid audio log database.

Terminal and Container City both did something wonderful: They showed some backstory.
Container City: A shanty town that obviously shows evidence of a society trying to survive with nothing but dirt, mud and garbage. It’s a hard living, but they’re making the best out of it. (Anyone seen the XXX place? Wink wink)

Terminal: A deserted airport lobby that obviously shows something hit the people by surprise. There’s luggage and garbage all over the place. Traces of people leaving in terror. It’s amazing. One of the signs linking to the falling of the Ark.

Both these two maps show depth. Both can be placed well in the (back)story of BRINK. And both are terrific places to just wander around. The other 6 maps? Not as much.

What it all comes to is obvious. Splash Damage had the ideas. But they just didn’t have the time, the financial support or the manpower to use them. And that’s just a damn shame. Because Splash Damage really threw their enthusiasm of BRINK’s story in our faces with the advertisements.

tl;dr: read it.
