Brink - How Do You Play Yours?

(gooey79) #1

Let’s talk tactics. One thing I’m always interested in is the tricks people use to play an objective based game in a way that works for them and the team. So, I’m curious. How do you play yours?

Two things that come to mind for me are:

Gibbing

Absolutely essential in a game where players can be revived. Especially if you can do it to the required objective class. If they’re unconscious on the floor and I’m not in a fire-fight, you can be sure I’m putting them back to the next spawn wave.

If it’s the objective class I take down, I’ll still try and gib them; even if it means dying myself. Without them, the enemy can’t progress.

Turret & mine placement

I don’t normally use these on the objective(s). I use them at the command post closest to. Personally, I think controlling these is important so I not only want a heads up on the enemy approaching one (mines going off or turret taking damage), but want to try and catch them out/kill them before they get the chance to start 'capping.

What are your gameplay tips and tricks?

Flanking and buffing seem to be pretty good tactics that come to my mind

I don’t put mines in the high traffic areas.

Take the hack room on Terminal for instance. If I put mines inside the glass box, then they will be gone very fast. They are useful for a delay, but planting them in the open like that can get you killed.
So, what I do instead is to try and constrict my opponents flexibility of movement with them. I might put one in the cubby hole…and I might put one behind the glass box. They idea is to sort of constrict them to the obvious areas, and keep them from utilizing the back hallway.

I put mines in corners and little camping spots…not in places where people throw grenades. The mines might sit there for most of the objective, but it allows me to focus on the gunplay more, and not worry about certain angles and spots. I’m basically just trying to funnel the other team into the areas that I want them to be.

Back when I was playing Killzone 2, clan matches were all about getting turrets and C4 out no matter what. Playing as an engineer, turrets had a higher priority than kills. So, you basically spawn, place a turret, deploy an airbot or some C4, and then if you can, you try to get some kills…but by that point…you are usually dead…so you just respawn and do it again.
Sometimes in a clan match, the engineers on the winning team would have like 15 gun kills to 40 deaths…but they still did their job well.
But the main reason that worked was because of the spawn grenade system. The tactician class throws the spawn grenade anywhere he wants, which allows his team to spawn there (at the risk of getting spawn killed…so the grenades need to be hidden somewhat…not easy when they emit smoke.) So…engineers are basically spawning near the objective, and the turrets serve as a delay between respawns.
However, in an Enemy Territory game, since you spawn far away from the objective, and you have team respawning, its more important to stay alive. A turret will not delay the other team long enough for you to wait for respawn and run all the way back.

So, I had to change my way of playing significantly…and I actually tend not to place mines in areas where I might get killed while doing so. I actually removed all turrets from my engineer as well just so that I can focus more on the mines and gunplay. That isn’t to say that I think the turrets are weak…(I think they are strong as hell when placed well.) I find that 2 deployables is just right…but trying to do 3 deployables in Brink will end up getting you killed. So, I would either go two mines, or single mine/turret setup…

Just started a new character that’s an Operative. Initially, I thought it wasn’t as good as the Covert Ops in ET:QW so didn’t really use one. But after playing as one for an hour or two, I can see a few strengths.

Have been using the Operative to sit behind enemy lines really just spotting (Homing Beacon) for my team. Mainly focussing on finding the Objective class and giving him a nice red glow. Aside from that, picking off lagging players on their own; Comms Hacking to show all enemies on the team’s radar then going back into disguise and doing it all over again.

Also been taking the Command Posts and applying the Firewall to buy some time (not that it appears to be much, mind you) to get back and defend it.

I suspect I’m using this class as expected but it’s been really quite fun so far. Much less direct gun battles than any of the other classes.

yea, i enjoy the operative pretty much also. one of the reasons is because i dont have to fight the damn autofollow system for buffing people. the disguise gets annoying sometimes though, especially when an enemy lays on stairs. sometimes i just cant reach them even if im standing right next to the corpse.

what i also like is the variety of grenades. i think it adds a lot to the gamepace. and if you are a light and sneak within the enemy lines, you can do a lot of damage.

yesterday i caused some serious trouble in the second stage of resort as a security. i killed half the team, several times. i got so close to the enemy i fired a few bullets and then killing them with melee, or vise versa. thats my usual tactic. knock down, fire.

the fights usually take place at the command posts. i think its mainly the operatives work to capture and hold them. they pretty much are hotspots if you play against a good team that actually tries to recapture them. i noticed some teams that just ignore the command posts, which is just wrong though.

yea, and the caltrops help to allert you of enemy positions, too. first you see the damage indicator and the xp indicator also shows that you gain xp with the caltrops. if this happens, you can sprint to your caltrops position and usually have the moment of surprise in your hand.

its funny, because usually im more the supporting guy, who wants to help his team activly. i thought my main character would be a medic, but the interaction mess really just frutrates me most of the time. so, i stuck with the operative for several weeks now and have a lot of fun.

edit: i just checked my stats for thit match on resort. i got 62 kills. thats by far the most kills i ever got in a match.

I play my Brink for 10 minutes and then fire up QuakeWars out of frustration.

Hot Potato

When I have my trench coat, sunglasses and top hat on, I like to find myself in a group of baddies (most of the time they don’t notice they have a double amongst them) and when “we” get in a fight, I like to throw down a galtrop and follow up with a sticky bomb to the nearest heavy.

Its a hilariously effective way to split the fire team up and take out a nice chuck of the cannon fodder.

Cut Throat

I seem to be getting less and less of an opportunity to do this, but when I can, I like to turn my enemy on themselves. Amongst a squad, I stab (or gun butt) the Roid Rager in front if there is one whilst friendly fire is on. It’s hilarious to see him shoot his own team in the back of the head whilst there’s a grenade cooking in the middle of it all.

Don’t Gib Me Bro

When I do find myself staring at ankles, I always have a smile on my face when the bugga who shot me down is hovering over me, about to finish the job.

-click-

BOOM! Brain all over the place.

:stroggtapir:

P.S. Am I the only one who knows how to effing sway!?

^lol…

As for the thread:

*Pick Medium Bodytype
*Pick Soldier
*Pick the Lobster for Primary
*And make sure you have nade shooting as an ability

Every player you come across, either molotov them, nade shoot them or knock them down with your Lobster GL. If you combine Lobster with molotov as a followup you should get the kill pretty easily. Also you can spray your SMG wildly to do a bit of damage and then nade shoot them in the face to finish them off.

Im sure at the end of the each round, players will marvel at gamestyle, if you follow my instructions.

KTHXBI glad I could help
