Personally,I find the similarities a good thing. More high-end class based fps’s need to be out there, especially ones that involve heavy amounts of team work. Do you think the similarities are good or bad? Discuss.
Brink Fortress 2
hello tinManz,
i personally dont know why people are comparing brink and team fortress2. i guess its just the young gamers that started with tf2 and dont even know about all the classic tf games. the team based/class system was actually invented long before tf2.
some research later… the first team fortress was actually a quake1 modification.
quote from wiki
NETQUAKE teamfortress, where it all started say through Mplayer.com HEAT.net KALI services. Before the QW in the QWTF, released in 1996 this was no bhop almost exclusively 2fort4/2fort5 matches on a variety of different quake1 launchers.
Fortress Evolution for Quake III Arena was intended to create a very close replica of the original QWTF, but was canceled and last released as an alpha build. It has recently returned as a standalone mod built upon Evolution Q3, but as a completely different project.
A mod titled Q3F, for Quake III Fortress, was developed for Quake III Arena in 2001. This mod was further developed into the Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory mod Enemy Territory Fortress, or ETF, in 2005; it had a notable initial following and many servers still operate, though it has since receded considerably in popularity.
Team Fortress Classic was an extremely popular mod for Half-Life created in April 1999. There are still servers for and players of Team Fortress Classic today.

Medic from TF2 to represent an Assassin like character? Close but no cigar
Still found it hilarious at times though

Pretty much. I actually find it more similar to Enemy Territory games than anything else, which is no surprise.
Holy shit.
Well, so far I don’t think there’s anything that stops somebody from being a melee orientated character picking up the medic class. It’s just that the trailer didn’t show any different classes at all.
…considering SD’s first project was called Quake 3 Fortress…
I love the way, anygame that has any similar aspect to another, even if it will have no impact on gameplay, in fact very little impact on anything, they get hailed as the next “insert random mediocre game”.
Brink has artistic graphics, that are not even close to the cartoon style of tf2, much closer to borderlands tbh… but anyway the trailer, has no wierd circus voices, no random sandwiches in a gun game and has varied weapons…its actually hard to find similarities…
thats sucks.
turning Brink to TF2 is tumb down, way to game be tabagged by consumers.
I can see why similarities are being drawn but over-all it’s all just kind of silly…A game with classes, especially an assortment of classes will usually be similar…I mean this goes back to tabletop games like Warhammer 40k (Created in the late 70’s) and probably before that to pen and paper RPGs.
You have your front line soldiers, heavy soldiers, stealth/scout units, mech/engineers, demolition men, and sometimes more…So if you look at it that way it’s like saying class based multiplayer games are copying old tabletop games.
Aside from that Brink feels nothing like TF2 it’s hard core fast paced tactical team based 8v8 with some fun thrown in. Where choices like class, weapons, upgrades, and body type affect how the game plays. Where as TF2 although having some tactical elements is more about over the top situations with class based objective team gameplay.
Brink has a story and tries to incorporate single player with multiplayer to encourage online play. But also gives you a choice to play cooperatively with friends or by yourself. TF2 has no story and is pointless to play with friends against AI and is multiplayer only.
In the end, the only similarities I can come up with are both games have classes and they both have a unique visual style (albeit they are much different from one another). Oh, and some objectives in gameplay are similar like what we’ve seen from the Container level and TF2’s Gold Rush, but it’s very minor…

BRINK is an [assumed] copy/paste of all games around mixed together, it as been stated by SD [you ignorant] so there is nothing wrong about doing a funny [but not that much for you [, sadpanda]] video on youtube about that.
I beg to differ. Brink looks like an attempt at redesigning some shooter conventions, not copypaste.
lol, hilarious video. Brinks serious atmosphere with TF2 goofy and dramatically absurd voice overs was comedy gold.
Brink will be nothing like TF2 though afaik
I think its safe to say that Brink will have influence from previous games, while simultaneously creating its own sense of novel design and structure. Even the agile, fast paced mobility of players was seen in Mirror’s Edge (although we can only assume it had some form of inspiration).
As far as saying similarities with tf2 are a pro, I was referring to game aspects such as : objectives heavily reliant on teamwork, long-term online play, class customization (most likely deeper than tf2), and strong community overall structure.
Similar or not, Brink will sure be able to stand on its own.
I have never seen the video that originally went with the TF2 soundtrack run over the Brink footage… I’d love to see it =P
I liked it though… t was quite funny… =)
“you fail, you wrong and you make no sense” (c ) another creature.
note: brink may/can/must/expected-to have Own face, like ET or ETQW does.
this not mean, reflection of other teams ideas automatically, but strong reason to consider it more seriously[before add].
