Brink Constructive Criticism

(Boognish) #1

Hello Splash Damage,

I’ll start off by saying as old veteran of Wolf ET and QW that I’m enjoying this game. The more I learn the maps and gameplay the better it gets. However, I do have several criticisms that I feel could be addressed in a patch.

Server Browser Issues
There are numerous issues with the server browser, and it could be so much better. A game like this has complex gameplay, so it’s unclear why you would dumb down the browser. It’s really bare bones and on PC I don’t think it should be. Browsers seem to be getting worse and worse as the years go on and to be honest it’s the thing every player sees before they play the game and you’d be better off fixing it up. Below are some of my gripes:

Server Filter - Either you hid it well or it’s not there. We need to be able to filter by players, gametypes, pings, hide empty, no bots, voice settings, etc.

Show Full Servers - Allow us to show full servers. Right now I get a list of 300 servers and none are full. By the time the list is generated all the 15/16 filled servers are full anyways so allow us to see the whole list. The lack of full servers displayed gives the appearanace of very few players playing. This was something that Section 8 suffered from badly. Don’t repeat that mistake.

Server Queues - Queueing for full servers has been around since Quake 2 if I recall correctly. Valve does it for their source games, I’m not sure why this can’t be done here. If a server is full and your friend is on it, let us wait in line for it rather than have to continually click on it randomly until a spot opens.

In Game
Scoreboard could use a little more information. I don’t mind not seeing K/D, but seeing people’s pings is helpful. The game can chug a bit sometimes and it’s nice to be able to check your and others pings to see if something connection related is happening rather than client side issues.

Anyone agree or disagree? Anything else that people can add that would be a “quick fix”?

It’s still better than the BC2 browser :stuck_out_tongue:

Also could they add a “quick game” option? To you know, find a quick game?

bc2 browser has been remarkably improved

and even during the BETA of bc2 it was bette than brink’s browser. At least that one didnt reduce my fps to 1

These suggestions seem entirely reasonable and the sort of thing SD should pay attention to. I can say that confidently without even having the game yet.

I don’t understand why so many server browsers on MP games are so poorly put together. The problems I had with Section 8 browser (no full servers showing, only empty ones or ones with bots), a game I quite liked, the browser killed it for me. I stopped playing it after about 3 days after release and it’s now uninstalled and will problably never play it again.

I can’t try it myself since I’m in Europe, but does the steam server browser work well with Brink? I can currently find 739 servers with the default browser, unfiltered.

Wait, what? How can I queue for games in TF2 for example (source)?

Not even close, lol. BCBF2 browser destroys anything else.

  1. try to join a full game
  2. it shows you the server infobox, server is full.
  3. you can set a radio button to either: a) alert me when server has got an empty slot (don’t actually do it the alert sound is horrifying) b) join server when a slot opens (if you are not in tf2, it will first launch tf2 and then join the server)
  4. it will refresh the game once every 10 seconds, you can manually refresh it too with the refresh button there

It’s the same server browser as the steam default I was asking about in my post, really. (right click steam in task bar and choose servers)

this server browser reminds me of how homefronts responds. both are extremely laggy, which makes them kind of useless. also we should be able to right click to see some server information, or to add to favorites.

Yea i agree with the almost everything in here but i also would like to see new game modes now i know TDM is out of the qestion cuz this is a team games… withch i like!! but i hade some ideas on some other modes that might be cool like maby and extraction mode where one team has to get into the other team base and capture like intel and bring it back to and extraction poitn or like a domanation mode were you have to capture the comand point or like a CTF or a search and destroy and i think a race mode would b cool to

I absolutely love Brink. I can’t stop playing it and all my friends love it to. The only thing is… we can’t play together. Seven of my friends have this game so on a good night we have a full team including myself. But we can never get into a game together, and if we manage that incredible feat… we’re never all in the same team.

The game is absolutely awesome, but not having a party system is ridiculous for a MP based game.

Brink = 100
- 40 (No party system)
----------
60% of full potential achieved.

Still, I really love the rest of the game. Good job SD

True, a server browser seems to be a rather easy part of the game to make. Still all newer releases are struggling in that area. This seems rather strange.
