brink - Console to PC port

(xdc) #1

Why i wont be playing brink for long:

*console to PC port feeling: the menus, gameplay, movies, (press F) for almost everything

*map designs/choke points, etc its easy for defense on some maps/objectives to keep attackers at their spawn points

*no customizations/cvars to setup your cfg (wow on a idtech engine)

*no SDK/mod

*server browser should have show empty/full, tags, blacklist, etc the ping/#players doesnt always show correctly. decade old browser

*disable movie clips before/after a game on multiplayer

*no end-scoreboard like ETQW(look up one) therefore no one chats, or says things like gg, etc so it leaves a empty feeling

*bugs/performace issuses/cvars not allowed to be changed

*cant change crosshair/color/size/alpha/etc
*cant change hud/ui alpha/size/color/etc
*cant change size of teammates player names/ammo/health, etc

*objective wheel buggy, so the enemy team will be doing a escort and you will not notice where the escort went because of the obj wheel. The escort/main objective should be always outlined, etc

*buffing players, and the whole ‘F’ (use) system is buggy

*cant respawn & change class at sametime
*cant see respawn timer

all this in no order, just randomly listed from the top of my head, there is more but i think you get the idea.

basically brink in PC feels too much like a console game. Unless it gets a overhaul, it won’t be my game to play not too long from now. The reason for playing on PC for this game has been taken away from me, minus well give me a mouse/keyboard for console.

I’d like to ask dommafia how he enjoyed the game, do you think it will live long as ETQW on the competetive side?

please leave now, you’ve missed the point

half of what you say is false

[QUOTE=xdc;312575]Why i wont be playing brink for long:

*console to PC port feeling: the menus, gameplay, movies, (press F) for almost everything

Opposed to pressing alot of random keys for everything? do you want them to use as many keyboard buttons as possible and make the menus a quick time event?

*games are too long, maps should of been developed for shorter games.

How is that anything todo with it been a port?

*map designs/choke points, etc its easy for defense on some maps/objectives to keep attackers at their spawn points

As above, nothing todo with been a port.

*no competetive side just try to win and gain XP,

As above, nothing todo with been a port.

*scoreboard needs score, k/d, ping. console scoreboard ftl

As above, nothing todo with been a port.

*no customizations/cvars to setup your cfg (wow on a idtech engine)

I can imagine them adding this at somepoint.

*no SDK/mod side to fix this empty PC feeling

Just because its a PC game doesn’t mean it has to be mod compatible, but they will probably add this later. This also has nothing todo with it been a port and more todo with the devs choice not to add it.

*server browser should have show empty/full, tags, blacklist, etc the ping/#players doesnt always show correctly. decade old browser

Considering consoles gamers don’t get a server browser i doubt the bad server browser list is anything todo with a port.

*disable movie clips before/after a game on multiplayer

Why? you can skip them after a couple of seconds and add a bit of life to the game…even if you have seen them before.

*no end-scoreboard like ETQW(look up one) therefore no one chats, or says things like gg, etc so it leaves a empty feeling

If you need a scoreboard in order to chat then you have a problem.

*bugs/performace issuses/cvars not allowed to be changed

Not sure why you put this, bugs and performance issues have little todo with it being a port.

*cant change crosshair/color/size/alpha/etc
*cant change hud/ui alpha/size/color/etc
*cant change size of teammates player names/ammo/health, etc

I’m surprised they didn’t allow the changing of crosshairs but the rest was probably a choice the devs made.

*objective wheel buggy, so the enemy team will be doing a escort and you will not notice where the escort went because of the obj wheel. The escort/main objective should be always outlined, etc

You can check the current objective using the wheel, do you want them to hold your hand in the game? its up to you too pay attention.

*should be able to mute everything said on ‘radio’ seperately,
such as disabled turret, needing revives, etc only need to hear main objectives

Not sure what games you can selectively mute certain things.

*buffing players, and the whole ‘F’ (use) system is buggy, especially on a PC where it is uncalled for with a 104 key-keyboard. ETQW/ET’s system was better, felt more competetive.

Obviously the devs disagree, and you can reassign the keys yourself.

*cant respawn & change class at sametime
*cant see respawn timer

A minor thing, and again nothing todo with it been a port.

all this in no order, just randomly listed from the top of my head, there is more but i think you get the idea.

Above in bold.

All in all you seem to have a grudge against consoles when most of your problems have nothing todo with it been ported to a degree.

Maybe if PC gamers gave devs a reason to give them more then they would get it, but pirating seems to be bad on the PC compared to consoles, you pay less and sales are lower.

not everything i listed has to do with it being a port, just some of the things I happen to dislike, as with everyother game I played, not a big deal.

the main issue here is every id-tech game i ever played had a endless list of customizations for your CFG, in brink you dont so it gives you a very limited feeling, and only consoles have the limited feeling.

Some examples to customizations:
crosshair type/size/color/alpha
hud components size/color/alpha
hitbeeps, headshotbeep
speedometer

etc

I love Brink, but I do agree the PC version is extremely lacking in what we’ve come to expect from high-end MP design.

From a console perspective, I love it (playing on ps3). Had I purchased for PC, I’d feel let down.

(Nail) #6

locked cvars will be unlocked soon, just wait, be patient

(fearlessfox) #7

That’s all good Nail, but you have to be understanding of people who are frustrated with the fact that they were locked on release.

However much we think Brink is a fantastic game, SD /did/ mess up the launch.

Patience is all well and good, but first impressions are a powerful thing.

(INF3RN0) #8

Not going to lie on this one, but Brink does feel like a console port atm. This is based on performance, lack of PC specific options, limited console modding (they even have the autoaim cvar…), and the somewhat auto-mated feeling of player2player interactions. Besides those issues, the gun play feels greatly watered down from past SD games. Some future patching/SDK should do a lot I think, but overall Brink revealed the positive sides of having a PC beta (could have cut the forum whine down 99%). Although the game is better than other titles, I actually think ETQW was much better overall (especially if it got a few more patches). I think we were all just expecting more from Brink with all the delays.

(ceya) #9

how do u know this?

(Nail) #10

I’m really smart

(xdc) #11

if you could, what cvars will be unlocked? as for right now I only notice cvars that will boost performance are locked, etc

Will they develop cvars for better customizations, etc?
Even if the cvars were unlocked, it still leaves PC players with a limited feeling

(eMwegA) #12

okay you got him. most of the issues have nothing to do with being a bad console port. most of the addressed bugs are a “game got released in beta status” issue… does that make it any better?!

(tokamak) #13

Because it’s untenable for them to keep them locked?

(Nail) #14

I believe they are locked for now to give the devs an accurate assessment of ongoing issues in a more or less standard state, once said issues are dealt with, things can change

(riptide) #15

Ya having me play with a solid 125fps is not fair to ATI users.

Look I love Brink and I’m happy with the game play other than losing control of your character and the gunplay favoring SMGs. But there are technical issues and FPS is one of them and most of these locked cvars improve performance. Because of this it’s almost as bad as Quake 4 was… which btw is a great game… NOW, but it lost its community in the first couple months.
