Brink Competition Round-up: The Right Rules and More

(coolstory) #241
a lot of PC players however tend to make the mistake that somehow they are better at ‘playing’ just because the controller is inferior.

You could try playing an FPS, doom 1 style, just keyboard and separate keys for ‘looking up/down’ and im pretty sure a console controller would beat that.

So do not go from ‘mouse>gamepad’ to ‘PC skill > console skill’.

PC games are definitely faster, but that could leave other types of skill more important in console version of the game.
Bottom line is that console player cannot transmit his own experience into PC playstyle, and vice versa
Actually no, I played halo1 on xbox, so much easier than pc games. The games so slow and with aim assist its so easy and boring.

Playing fps games with aim assist on console competitively. What a joke.

There is a kind of skill ceiling with both control methods. And that’s where the difference between them is.

With a gamepad, the skill ceiling is dictated by the hardware, but with keyboard and mouse, it’s dictated by human reaction times, precision, and the pace at which we can make smart decisions and process the information we receive (mostly intuition/experience).

So if the movement mechanics and weapons are designed to support it, the pings are low enough and the game engine can keep up (etc). The actual skill ceiling in a mp game on PC can be practically unreachable.

And then there are teams of people, if the individuals within them are limited by a skill ceiling (hardware or software), teams are as well. Granted very few games end up being played at a level where people hit that skill ceiling, but if there is one, it starts to affect things long before it is hit.

I think.

YEAHOP this thread has run it’s course.

being an (un)biased PC player i can definitely argue that PC games have the ‘skill ceiling’ higher, which seems true of course; because whatever skills might be more important in comp console games (i can imagine positioning being much more important) i was only trying to argue against the arrogance of oh so many PC players who think that just because comp PC is requiring more twitch reflexes, that they are somehow better players, which i consider untestable.

Its kind of like Starcraft 1 to Starcraft 2. In starcraft one there is a skill of being able to control a number of control groups at once, especially when your army becomes really big. You no longer have that problem in starcraft 2. But arguing that somehow starcraft1 players are ‘better’ because they need to be able to have that additional skill is, well, in my opinion - ludicrous.

These “twitch reflex” games aren’t really about twitch reflexes, unless the difference in skill is big enough of course.

Here’s a nice glimpse at the strategy in one of the “twitchiest” games of them all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdkDjsBiO58

TL;DR, whenever game companies experiment with cross platform FPS, mediocre PC gamers are able to crush console pros because the control scheme is much more precise. Its not about sensitivity, its about precision. No matter how good you are, the thumb is just not as accurate as your arm and wrist, its not meant to be.

That’s not to say that skill is lacking on consoles, skill is relative. You don’t compare a rifle and a pistol for accuracy, an accurate pistol is still not as good as a normal rifle; and you don’t compare a motorcycle and a car for stopping speeds, a good motorcycle still isnt as good as a normal car. If a PC player went on a console, they aren’t suddenly pros, and if a console player goes on PC, they aren’t horrible.

The argument some people make is that the skill ceiling is lowered when there is an artificial obstacle such as difficulty with controls, and i cant really say, since I haven’t ever spent extended periods of time with consoles. To me it seems like a bogus argument though, because those same people will turn around and compliment a player for having amazing aim, which boils down to manipulating a mouse. Seems like more difficult controls would just be more rewarding to the players at the top, not less.

Edit: I guess it would depend on if there was an upper limit to how good you can get with an analog stick. With a mouse, I’m not sure that there is; eventually it gets to a point where you can hit whatever you look at.
