Then I guess we can all agree on that merely obtaining the beta through signups or preorders isn’t desirable. Rather no beta than that.
Brink beta and my pov
Well I’m just talking a selection criteria to have valuable participants. I’m not suggesting anyone is perfect, only that it makes sense to pick people who have some (proven) experience. A fresh pair of eyes with some knowledge behind them.
Of course if you throw out a wide net you’ll also get some quality people that way too but you’re also accepting a lot of noise as a consequence.
I think the wide net is the best choice, a small pool of focused people will miss out on things another area of focused people would see etc. I wouldn’t expect mappers and modders to be able to discuss the finer mechanics of ground acceleration and air friction, the same I wouldn’t expect a tricker to grasp issues with map glitches etc. Point being, you need a wide net to gather a wide area of feedback… saying limit the beta to a small focus group is just a silly idea and should’ve been shot down as quickly as it was suggested.
In all the interviews they’ve gone from saying that ‘they are currently discussing that with bethesda’ to saying ‘they can’t say anything about it at the moment’.
Hopefully they can share something with us quite soon. I can feel that something is coming!
God damn, it sounds as if half of you don’t want to play this several months earlier. Saying you would rather have a closed beta than a open beta. Why exactly? Your saying you would rather they have a closed beta, one you can’t get into?
People are just a little bit smarter then just wanting to play an unfinished game. They would rather play a better game and a finished product.
Playing a beta is not about playing the game either, might be a nice bonus but the main point of it is to help out in ensuring the game has no flaws.
Open betas can hurt a game if not handled with care, people will treat it as a finished product to review and voice their opinion on, creating bad word of mouth and jeopardising the game’s popularity and future playerbase.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see the game released today and play it right away. But I prefer to wait if it means we get a better product.
Note that the player (Richard Ham I believe.) knew exactly what worked and what didn’t. Fair chance half of the stuff in the game didn’t work yet which you didn’t get to see.
eh, he used a lot of stuff man. But some other thread, it said something about a forum exclusive beta. i like the sound of that.
Nah I don’t think i’ll satisfy your ego by explaining the finer points of why it’s a silly idea. In fact, let’s add some ‘depth’ to the thread and you try and figure it out yourself.
Not really, he used 3 or 4 different weapons, just 1 map on just 1 faction and 1 bodytype.
Also many other things like the options menu, serverbrowser etc were not shown. Fair chance all of this wasn’t done yet and there’s no point releasing the game without it.
Don’t want to sound rude but you obviously never made a map or a mod or, for that matter, a product that you work intently for hours and hours. When you work on that kind of project, you lose sight of things. You’re so engrossed into it that obvious things slip.
Then there’s the balance issues which can only be tested with full teams playing right. And, of course, a single mapper or even a small team of mappers can’t do. Balance is more often than not what needs to be tested.

People with mentality like this ruined first ETQW beta.
And no, I prefer 1.0 release.

You are being rude. Instead of assuming, ask, then you won’t have to slap the obligatory ‘I don’t want to sound rude’ remark in front when it’s not meant. Yes I have made maps, and your comment only strengthens the fact that that stuff gets missed… and more than likely more so when you limit to a focus group who only look out specific thing geared towards their line of work.
You’re funny. I’ll give you that.
Anyway, when I will be rude, you will know. I specifically said it so it wouldn’t be taken as such. shrugh You decided it was, your problem, not mine.
