Brink Architectural Style?

(Faux) #1

Does anyone know if the Ark’s architecture (maybe I should just call it ‘Arkitecture’) corresponds to a real world style?

From what I can see online and from personal experience, it seems like some combination of cruise ship/luxury yacht design, Expressionist Architecture, and tropical resort architecture. (Like Atlantis in the Bahamas.)

I would love to know what the Brink devs referenced while coming up with the Ark. But if anyone recognizes the style or happens to have some applicable references, please post them here!

Using the video (as seen above), and my knowledge of what I learned in my game design courses, the Ark is a linear (obviously because it’s a sky scraper) and Container City is clustered, which is actually a very popular architectural type in Brazil, as seen in their shanty towns.

Thanks for that link! It’s pretty helpful, although I would kill for Splash Damage to release an Art Book. (Seriously; I’d easily drop upwards of $50 on it assuming it was at least an 8x10 full color book.)

I went through all of the non-Shanty Town maps earlier tonight and took a mammoth amount of screenshots of each. There are some noticeably common design trends, so I’m starting to get a clearer idea of what they were doing. (Like curved but beveled support lattice work, Arcoral mirroring Brain Coral in surface texture, curved walls and floors, segmented panel-like assembly of certain areas… it’s all becoming clear.

I also found a hilarious Demolition Man joke on the Resort map. There’s one area you can get to in the final Resistance respawn which has a toilet with three seashells sitting nearby. No toilet paper anywhere. Gold, Jerry! Gold!

Oh, for what it’s worth, I think Splash Damage was also inspired by the Arcologies of Paolo Soleri. At least I hope so! (It’ll be nice to know someone other than me loves that man’s architectural drawings. :D)

Wikipedia - Arcology

There’s a section on similar real-world projects. (Ha, brink is listed under popular culture.)

I would rather not talk about architecture, recently laid off from a firm that was going in the wrong direction. (Maybe that’s why I’m on the forums so much now!:D) All I can tell you is that somehow the economy must of gotten a big pay day when they decided to build the ark. I think it’s some European, middle asia style. Reminds me of a lot of the new F1 racing circuits that they are constructing now days.

Wow! It’s like I’m looking at the Ark. Those two links are, I think, just what I was looking for. Thanks so much for providing them!
