Being able to make maps is one thing, but actually figuring out WHAT to map is a completely different thing. I swear, I couldn’t come up with an idea for a map for the life of me. So, I’m just asking, how are all of you inspiring in your great mapping ideas and conquests?
BRAINDEAD!
watching movies could be a possible source.
shortly there was a movie called “the train” shown on tv here in germany. axis were falling back and
carrying lots of famous paintings in wooden crates on a train. a single allies soldier that happened to
come around the railway tried to blow it up, loosening screws and planting dyno…
that could be a nice map… axis are escorting a train that is loaded with several crates with famous
paintings in it… stolen during their campaigns… and allies are trying to interfere and prevent axis’
escape by blowing up rock walls leaving rubble on the track, blowing up the track itself, switching
trackswitches in order to crash the train…
generally the best advisor is history itself. just have a look at real-et.com… some french guys
try to gather the background information splashdamage used for mapping. you’ll find yourself
surprised. read some infos on ww2 history, pick an event and get crazy with it.
What inspires me is asking the question, “what would I like to play?”. What kind of environment. I had an idea for an ET map a while ago, where it would be hedgerow fighting up to some sort of mansion. Kind of like what the Allies might have encountered after landing in Normandy. You know, a very long straight road, with fields on each side seperated by the rows. I tried to do the terrain, but it would have been a performance pig the way I envisioned it. You probably didn’t want specific ideas, but if you find out how to create inspiration, let me know.
I come up with a theme (e.g., coolant facility) and a game mechanic (e.g., satchelable, draining obj) or visa versa and build a map around it
a single allies soldier
It was actually a french man, played by burt lancaster
Excellent movie, I thought about trying to make a map of that myself at one time.
i had the same prob and still having probs.
i start out with this greath idea i had one paper i draw it like 100 times.
then i start mapping and when im like half way trow i am already changing stuff.
and in the end im dont know what the hell its gonna be to many idea run true my head.
this movie could be a greath idea (the lost bataljon)
i get my best idea’s with playing other games or other ET maps from other people you like ripp in a drawing and you construct it better in radiant like i based my ssb map on MP_beach
I find getting a big fat WW2 book and reading through all the different battles is a good way to come up with some great ideas. Once you’ve choosen a battle, do a little bit of research on it, and choose an aspect to design a map around it.
Dammit when I saw the title of the post I immediately thought “wow someone’s doing a map based on Braindead, great!”
sadly tis not the case :bored:
Hey up…
Inspiration
“shortly there was a movie called “the train” shown on tv here in germany. axis were falling back and
carrying lots of famous paintings in wooden crates on a train. a single allies soldier that happened to
come around the railway tried to blow it up, loosening screws and planting dyno…”
This is pretty much what I’m making…axis have to get the train fixed to collect cargo and swoop off with the goodies…
Is set late 1944 in North Italy/Alps …the campaign was called something like the ‘gothic line’
Look in the resources and references on this site for ideas.
Also build what YOU want to run around in!
oh yes!
