Black box glitch - unplayable

(Itasuke) #1

Hey Splash Damage, since installing Brink I have been experiencing the black box glitch/artifacting.
Issues include:
-black boxes from grenades, gunfire
-ark icons messed up (bottom half)
-aiming reticule/reload meter messed up (bottom half)

It’s making the game unplayable, which is very frustrating since I REALLY want to play it. I have been looking around for fixes the whole week, and haven’t been able to find anything helpful. I have reinstalled the game several times both through steam and from the disc.

I have an Acer Aspire 5745G with a GeForce 330M 1GB, Intel i5, 4GB RAM, windows 7 home premium 64bit.
It’s probably worth mentioning I have never had any issues with other games, and I’ve always been able to play on the highest settings with no lag or anything like that.

It would seem the most likely course of action would be to update my video drivers, but it won’t work. It says I have to update from the Acer support page, but their drivers seem kind of old. When I try to install from nVIDIA directly it says something like “hardware not found”, but the hardware is obviously there. Is there some way to bypass this?
I’m making an attempt at attaching images, no idea if it’ll work:

Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Is this for Windows XP, or Vista? Or Windows 7?

I forgot those details, it’s windows 7. I’ll edit the OP.

Go here, and pick which ones you need, they are only a year old, which is surprisingly young. My most recent drivers for my dell were from 2008, so I know what you mean. They do work though. http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

Thanks for the tip, but it doesn’t really seem to work;

Am I doing something wrong? :frowning:

You could also locate drivers on http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ They often come with modified inf files to allow the drivers to be installed on OEM video cards. And the for the ones that do not come with the modified inf file, you can use the inf enhancer to create one for your system.

EDIT:
You can find your video drivers if you scroll down on that list of drivers in that screenshot you posted.

Interesting, but a really messy site, I’m not sure what I’m even looking for. Anyways, I scrolled (waaay) down and found the 270.61 drivers, which I think are the correct ones, and when I clicked it this came up:

Do I click INF Modified? (I’m really scared of doing something wrong/stupid and wrecking my computer, haha)

Thanks for all the help!!!

EDIT: Aw man, I misread your edit, I didn’t see that I could scroll down, how silly of me. I feel like an idiot. Gonna try that. Haha.

Download the driver and the inf. When you run the driver downloadable it will ask you where you want to extract the files. The default is the current folder location (probably your Downloads folder). This will create a folder called 270.73_win7x64.

Copy the nv_disp.inf file you downloaded to the 270.73_win7x64\Display.Driver folder. It’ll say there’s already a file with the same name. Choose “Copy and Replace”

Then run setup.exe in the 270.73_win7x64 folder.

Okay, so I followed all the steps, extracting and copying and whatnot, and this came up:

Which intel drivers is it referring to? It feels like I’m a bit closer to sorting this out now.

And FYI, I’m Swedish, that’s why all the text looks messed up ^^

BUMP. I was finally getting somewhere!

(Moonlighter) #11

I have no idea what Intel driver that’s looking for.

(Itasuke) #12

Aww… I checked, and it’s not my processor, and I tried the two that seemed related from here http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers but nothing happened… It seems I’m doomed to not be able to play Brink. It sucks. Is there any chance this might be fixed in a patch or something?

(Moonlighter) #13

Have you tried the VGA Driver (310M_GT330M) from that page?

(Itasuke) #14

Yeah, didn’t work. It’s pretty old (?) anyways, so either it’s too old or the drivers aren’t the problem…

Update: I tried restarting my computer and checked the game; my heart skipped a beat when I discovered that the Ark-logos when adjusting gamma in options no longer artifacted. To my disappointment it was still messed up in-game, with black boxes and stuff everywhere, and a lot of the HUD artifacting… I’m contemplating reinstalling the game once again.
