Best Way to Practice?

(blisteringOwlNest) #1

So I was wondering, is there any particular way anyone would recommend to practise? for example, a good merc to practice aiming with, the best game mode, any general advice? Not just for dirty bomb, but as a way to practice FPS skills in general using Dirty Bomb?

Opening maps and trying jumps, learning movemen, objectives, what mercs work best on what maps etc.

Also, watching DB streams of people playing live. Notice things they don’t, anticipate their moves and see if they do it.

The best way is to simple play the game. Do not go in with expectations, do your best, and stick with a teammate even if what they do seems dumb. Do not solo it, you learn nothing.

Well! Good mercs to practice your aim with are basically all but Rhino & Vassili.
It’s not like you have to aim with Rhino and you’ll want to learn the first step of aiming before doing the flickshooting with Vassili.

I’ve improved a ton after having consistency.
You don’t need the best equipment of all time, however smooth 60 FPS and a slip proof mouse pad (if you use one) is a must for sure.
Maybe you need an external crosshair?

Last but not least, perhaps it’s not only because of your aim.
You can have incredible aim but if you find yourself in the middle of nowhere it won’t rescue you from decent players.

Find out which mercs are best for offense and defense, for example sawbones and pheonix seem better as offensive side medics while sparks and aura seem better as defensive (from my experiance and how others play sawbones because i dont have him)

One of the things that helped me build muscle memory for quick responses and target acquisition was practicing 180’s (which I did a lot back in my early Q3 days). I would constantly do 180 both ways which allowed me to quickly and consistently turn around and built a baseline for my muscle memory. Once you build the muscle memory for that you can work on other common distances you’d want to change and you can work on reacting to your spin and stopping it short or making it go farther based on what you see. It sounds simplistic but it truly works wonders.

Also, a side benefit is you can quickly set your sensitivity on any setup or any other game perfectly because you won’t’ be going off of numbers…you’ll be using your own muscle memory.

Other than that you can go play Quake 3 for a few years. That will help your DB game!

Focus on tracking:

  • Keep your crosshairs head level ( there are ussually a head level lines on walls/etc)
  • Aim where the enemy is most likely coming from ( the corner of a wall, not the middle of an opening)
  • If your aim consitantly misses left to right and back again, you are overcorrecting, lower your sensitivity.
  • Learn burst fire and aim-down sights effective ranges.

Something you can do is learning basic player patterns. much like bots in offline games people also have their patterns learn to identify them and soon you will see yourself predicting stuff easily. The things you need to look at are:

-How they move( this is how they look arround and at you, where their gun is pointed and their way of observating their surroundings).

-How fast they react/move (determines level of threat).

-Their pathing (this how they move arround the map it determines also which path they will take to atack you).

Also try to be a bit more aggressive ubh-jekt-tivs won’t do themselves enemies respawn anyways. I’M not saying run in the oppen but try to find tactics to destabilize your enemie so your team can grow a pair and also attack from the gap you left, after you’re dead of course.

here are some basic all FPS tactics:

meat shield- you shield someone like a shield and get shot at while he does the objective or disarm the c4 this means you take the bullet and you don’t move until hes done or you’re dead. also don’t stand besides him stand in front of him stand in the direction he is most likely to get shot from and at this possition look at the other possibilities.just shooting isn’T enough when you’re not the one behing shot at.

sacrifice- sometimes like in DB you can run with a proxy in there and drop mines which are letal to the enemy this way you will not only disrupt them but also maybe explode some or one of them which counts as distabilization.

dodging- some guns like sniper rifles and shotguns can be dodged by fast classes(even in other FPS which don’t have fast classes) use an unusual pathing to make your enemie think you are going to move in a direction and move in an other direction but not always the opposite just the fastest so you can keep the momentum from the game you are playing and avoid behing a still target for too long.

hearing- try to listing to the shooting to know where your enemie is atacking from ( is it B site or A site, long or mid?) and try to hear footsteps guns relaoding enemies cooking nades spining miniguns etc etc to know how they are going to atack and how they are going to turn the corner.

these are all exemples try to be creative in the games you play like that you find things you can use in your advantage in each game. like how to trick jump for exemple and long jump also.

I’ll just refer to my guide:

Section 4. Practice and Behavior.

I would suggest one simple thing: Just play.
Play everything, play everyone and play him/her everywhere. If you start with: “Play this merc there, play that combination on this map” and so on, you gonna prepare less than if you just learn and practise everything everywhere.
Well, that means I have to play Sparks and Vassili somedays. :cold_sweat:

@Litego awesome guide, thank you very much! lots of great info in it, and i would love to see it pinned in New players or something.
