Sawbonez, Nader, Bush/Fletch, or Phoenix would be my recommendations in that order. Ultimately it’s up to you to find what you enjoy playing and grab 'em.

I recommend the following IN order:

  1. Fletcher
  2. Nader
  3. Phoenix
  4. Arty
  5. Fragger

The one you get isn’t important except in one regard:
DON’T BUY A F***ING SNIPER!

Have fun in Dirty Bomb, and welcome to the community!

I’d say Nader or Fragger, but Skyhammer is a really solid starting mercanary. If you prefer burst weapons over full auto, Arty is almost a direct upgrade over Skyhammer.
Thunder is also a decent pick for newbies, even if you can’t take full advantage of the concussion nade - his high HP and the large magazine of the LMG allows some mistakes.

Fletcher isn’t that easy to learn imo, but not as hard as Sparks for example either. He is free right now, so you can try if you like him or not.

Are you new to FPS gaming in general, or you have some experience with other games?

  1. Phoenix
  2. Nader
  3. Arty
  4. Bushwhacker or Fletcher or Proxy

Always play your role appropriately.

I played Fletcher cuz he was free when I joined Dirty Bomb game, but later when I bought Proxy it got super easy to get top score and win in low level servers (equal to my level)

but noone suggests her cuz they don’t want another proxy in the game

The best merc for beginners is definitely Phoenix in my opinion. That really good self sustain is just THAT helpful when you start. Especially if you consider the fact that other beginners won’t think that much about finishing their targets. The self revive becomes less useful at higher lever of play, but Phoenix still remain extremely useful and his self sustain is only matched by Sparks, who actually can’t sustain the team as much as Phoenix do. If you don’t like Phoenix and still seek another medic however, Sawbonez is still a very good pick, though he does not have that self sustain, making him harder to play. He’s however the medic with the most hp in the game as of today and tends to sustain the team better than Phoenix do.

However most beginners will need an engineer as well. I don’t consider Fletcher as a good choice for begineers due to the fact that he plays very differently from most mercs in the game. And while Proxy is a cheap merc to buy, she gives bad players terrible habits like rushing around with mines and ignoring your guns (though you WILL top score with her since other beginners WILL fall for the mines). It’s the same for Fletcher as well (you are quickly tempted to abuse the Sticky Bombs, especially in situations where you should NOT use them). The best choice in my opinion would be Bushwhacker. People still fall for the turret anyway, but he won’t give you bad habits.

If you want another Fire Support, honestly, all of them are pretty competant. Arty is probably the best choice, though Stoker is easier to play but highly map dependant. Kira is harder to play due to her lower hps but the Orbital Strike is tons of fun. You can’t go bad with any of them, but I think Arty is the best candidate. Be careful though, burst fire guns and dreiss play differently than automatic weapons. You might need some time to adapt yourself.

Now about the assault mercs, Nader tends to give to beginners terrible habits as well : people who are using the grenade launcher in a situation where they shouldn’t are really common. But on the other hand Fragger is a harder to play, Rhino won’t really make you learn as much as the others… So I would dare to recommend Thunder instead, since he’s easier to handle than Fragger (you don’t need to cook that flashbang). Sorry people, I know it’s pure evil…

… But heh, if you use Fragger you should be fine too. Gotta learn the cooking after all.

Oh and I won’t recommand any Recon. Seriously, newbies shouldn’t touch Recons. You need to have a very good aim, not spam your weapon a lot, and they tend to be hard to play. I won’t recommand Phantom either, because he gives terrible habits and would only get you at the bottom of the scoreboard for pushing too far the melee play. Dirty Bomb is a game about shooting : you shouldn’t bring a knife in a gunfight.

for me i find the best mercs for newcomers being:

Skyhammer
Fragger
Flecther
Proxy
Sawbonez
Arty (his airstrikes work in a small radius but he gets two of them and they have a quick cooldown of 20 secs, but his airstrikes take some precision)
