best modeling program to map in?

(ACROBAT) #1

blender?
3dmax?
maya?

Whats the best one to learn for mapping, and then importing to radiant?

you shouldn’t really make maps as a model…

and there is no real answer to ur question. some people will say blender, some 3d max. truth is, everything u will want to make for et u can make even in milkshape.

Blender is free, 3dsmax isn’t, yet i prefer 3dsmax for its simplicity(took me less time to get the hang of it).

Making a whole map as a model is indeed useless, but if you find brushes limited and patches not reading your mind, do make some parts as models.

I suggest you to try out Blender. Learn the basics in it and move into more complex programs if you feel the need for it.
For example Cinema 4D, but it lacks support to some type of models. (at least it was like that when i tried)

Edit: There is a map that is made only with models, can’t remember the name though.

as far i remember, saberpeak terrain was first made as a model… ?

Using models to make maps is a good thing, allows for any detail, but is difficult to plan, as you still have to caulk and seal areas off for vis…

Plus, if i am correct, there won’t be no hassle with Tjuncts. :infiltrator:

Texturing will be annoying though…

I am recomending gmax, is free and can export md3, ase, md2
You need to fix md3 model( if using mirror object ) - use md3 compiler to correct normals

Comes down to preference. I prefer 3ds Max, but also played around with Blender which also does quite well. Modo looks very appealing as well.
