*BEGINNER* Shader Manual?

(Chackazz) #1

I’m getting deeper and deeper into the intricacies of map making and learning only now how much shaders has to do with…oh…EVERYTHING…so I went to some in the sticky post and have done some searching, but they all seem to assume you understand a lot before ‘teaching’ you anything…was wondering where you guys started out on writing shaders?

have you read the shader manual with radient?

if you’re talking about the same one I am, then yes…about 4 paragraphs and just explains shaders in a roundabout way

I’m in the same boat as you I think. I’m trying to find a good beginners tutorial on shaders but all I have found is the shader manual and the examples to go by. Fortunately I’ve been able to successfully make a couple but it’s been a lot of trial and error.

I have read the “Unofficial Quake3 Shader Docs Build 2.0” and from there got a very good insight in what a shader is and what all the stuff in it does.
I have uploaded the .html files to my site under tutorials.

Sounds like you are doing well and learning the art of shaders. Good news in my books.

Try this link, it may help : http://woekitten.org/misc/
Its an off-line source and written in a very different style to the normal shader manuals.

Another good source is to look at the shaders which come with the game. Find one that is similar to what you want, make a copy with a new name, and start changing stuff.

yah I’ve figured out several of the uses of a few terms for shaders…mostly surfaceparms because they’re almost self-explanatory  thx guys really appreciate all of the references, and I’ll have to give them a good look when I get home from work :disgust:
