So after watching this video from Angry Joe, and seeing the comments section and how many people bashed the game for it’s business model, but not the actual gameplay and quality of it…yea, rant time incoming.
First, let’s explain what free to play means folks, free to play is JUST that, free to play and try out. Meaning instead of getting some cut down demo, you get to play the game in it’s entirety, and see how it plays from the get go. You get to play it and try to get invested in it before you make any actual purchases.
You CAN spend money, but the reality is you DON’T have to. First off, after the most recent update, Bronze cards offer everything Silver and up do, the only difference is the skins. Second, yes, you only get two mercs to start out with, but Splash is actually allowing you to try out 3 other mercs at a time during the free rotation, so you can try out a merc before you buy it or spend your hard earned credits on it.
So with that said, let’s say you start off as a fresh player, you start out with Skyhammer and Aura, and learn how to play the game with just those characters, ok? By the time you get to level 6, you should have amassed enough credits to get one merc, and by the time you reach 10 you can get another, with just credits. So, try out the mercs in the free rotation, see what two you like, then buy them. Then, get bronze cards for them, Aura, and Skyhammer that you like and suit your playstyle. And from there, you can keep playing, keep racking up credits and keep improving.
And that, is how you take advantage of the free to play, and ignore the whole “pay to win” bullshit. Because here’s the thing, loadout cards don’t mean jack. Money != skill, so get your Dirty Bomb chops up before you start investing in this game. Because otherwise, yea, you will be wasting your money, on a game you don’t even play or take seriously in the first fucking place.
Do I like the business model Nexon has imposed on this game? No, BUT, I don’t think it’s entirely to blame on them if you’re so willing to spend your money that you can’t see the fine print. The game offers everything you NEED to enjoy it, WANT however is different. And if you want to spend your money like that, then go ahead, but seriously, play the game first people. That’s really what Splash Damage wants you to do anyhow.
