Basically, ive got a wire running down a mineshaft of sorts, and i think the no-thickness alpha testure will look a bit poo. I just want to apply a nice simple single colour grey to it. No fancy textures, but then nor is there any that fit the bill. Is there a way round this? Or will i have to settle for the alpha texture/closest texture match?

Yeah, just make the brush the shape you want, also try a cylinder then just use a basic metal texture on it… Also, if you want it to look boring and the same all the way down down, stretch the texture until it suits. Plus, if you do use the cable alpha texture on each side of your brush, it looks kinda cool as there are 4 separate cables bunched together.
