Base Race - Defining the concept

Hi folks !

I read a lot on this forum about people complaining that DB is getting a bit, ehh, boring. Many of you suggested that new game modes should start to appear and I agree. So with the little time I can spare from my studies, I started defining the concepts on how to take the original BR from W:ET and bring it up to speed so it would fit DB.

Of course this cannot be put in a post as this is too long, therefore I wrote a small pdf document with my main thoughts on the matter. Spoiler : it’s seven pages long (with pictures too ^^). So if you have the courage to go through it, feel free to comment and discuss it in this thread !

I will also start posting concept arts in this post as I finish them. Here is the first !

It’s a short analysis taking the first version and finding ways to refresh it so it would fit DB, I also give some content on the map I’ve been working on so far. Hope you guys will find it interesting and can help bring new ideas !

Loved Baserace a lot! I guess in Dirtybomb it would be just as fun but with better gfx and more people to shoot!

ive just read through it.
from your plan its very similar to the original. ie one long field with some cover.
if you want to evolve the BR idea why not make a more complex layout.
BR is basically CTF with a twist. For which there are many different versions.
i would suggest a ctf type layout but with the base build and a layout of your own design.

if you keep too much to the original design it will just be compared to that and as a copy.
if your going to make a new BR type map use the opportunity to create something different.
but just take from BR what made it special, the steal and build.

Taking the steal and build I mention it in the document. For me that’s all that should be left untouched from the original version.

Then for the question of evolving the base race, there are two ways of doing it :

  • change the map layout
  • change the mechanics and complexity of the game.

I worked mainly on the second way, thanks for remembering me to use the first one too. I’ll think about what could be done to twist the layout of the map without altering the balance of the teams. I’ve already mentioned that the map should not be completely symmetrical, but still offer some balance. Also I like things simple and stupid, that’s where some good fun comes from IMO.

Anti said he’d love the day that SD could do a different gamemode than objective/stopwatch.

I’d like to hear from SD if base race (and gun game) would be suitable candidates for inclusion and if they’ve been mentioned/considered yet.

TDM=personnaly i wont never be a player of that mode …not my type
CTF = can be fun but too common …its been used in many games for long time ,I think players need something else …CTF is ‘passé’ (french word)

Other modes:
Zombie =please no …not again :confused:

  • I would like (like you would says :P" a WTF game mode!"…something crazy and fun

BR= Interesting mode …still serious …but its Ok
I think game modes are there to offer something different when you bored of the default game mode .Although some may like better the sec mode over the primary game mode

I’d read your pdf and liked, this new (for me) mode .I see it a bit kind of like a RTS game mode ( the construction side)
I Think SD should look at your project and work something cool out of it.
Not sure if the way you see that mode would be the best…but I certainly think it worth building a mode under the base and model you bringing with BR

P.S. In English we usually only use the 1st person singular form of French words, that is to say if you would have said passé we would have got your meaning. :slight_smile:

Thanks for your review ! I’m trying to level the ground here by working on new ideas for the base race so that SD may take a decision. IN the roadmap other game modes are in the last position, so lesser priority, which gives me time to work on a suitable concept and hopefully a map in the UnrealED.

Concerning my view of what Base Race should become if ever integrated into DB, I know this is only my ideas and thoughts, that’s why I posted it here so we may achieve a better work and give SD a complete document with many ideas for them to start with ! I will keep completeting the document with what this thread brings.

Et j’étais plus très sûr de savoir si Montreal était francophone, maintenant je sais (French sentence) xD

Before we even start talking about new game modes, the current game modes need to be fixed. I could care less about stringing out wasted resources on a new game mode if the core game mode isn’t working correctly as is right now.

That’s the point dude, we do it so they don’t have to, meaning they gain time to work further on the core of the game. The devs support this approach and even encourage it.

We’ll be open to any new game mode ideas I’m sure, the more the merrier. When we’ll get around to potentially adding some to DB though is a whole other matter, we really need to get our current modes right first! :slight_smile:

By all means keep the suggestions coming though.

How about we -really- want the core of the game to be fixed first? I think some of you forget this is an alpha.

Some of us think about the survivability of the game once released. Only objective/SW game modes are probably not enough to keep the casual player addicted … And again, I talked with Anti^ and it’s not going to be taken into account until they reach the end of the current roadmap, which fixes the core first.

We take time to prepare this because we have some to spare, and later when SD will start thinking about other game modes, they will have a neat proposition, with a clear, short and well explained documentation. What you don’t understood so far is that we can talk and discuss about these things, it won’t change the roadmap of SD which is built logically. Have faith in them, they know what they are doing ^^
