Bad internet

(Tom2160) #1

Okay so I have really BAD internet (average 100-300 ping). In addition to this my internet cuts off every 30 minutes which really pisses me off.

Anyone know how I can fix this or not get pissed off?

(ElDingDong) #2

have you tried turning your router off and on?

(Dysfnal) #3

Odds are that won’t help, I know from experience, and I feel you man

(Tom2160) #4

@ElDingDong Yeah I do it quite often. For the next 20 minutes it usually fixes it but then it goes back up to 100+ :frowning:

(Tom2160) #5

@jokingLoan Worst part of it is. Is when I get disconnected whilst I’m doing really well, or its just a fun match/balanced teams.

(Dysfnal) #6

Wow that sucks, I had a circuit short out right after I got a 4 kill airstrike on an execution match, I know how you must feel, but all the time would suck

I get high pings usually during peak times in my country, which is usually 7pm to 10pm. I also occasionally get huge pings spikes which are 200+, but it doesnt really hinter my gameplay for some reason.

Wired or wireless?
Direct connection to the actual modem, or is there more hardware in between?
Cable length and condition?
Is the ping also that high when using something like http://www.speedtest.net/ ? Can you post the results?
Are there other connected devices suffering the same problem?
Was it better before?

Update your router Firmware.

I heard microwaving your router will double its connectivity.

(Tom2160) #11

@Matuno I have a wired connection. The router is plugged into a plug extender. When I see my ping on speedtest I get around 40-80ms (Sorry wasn’t sure how to attach a photo). No other devices suffer problems from high ping. However, my brother also gets high ping whilst playing DB.

Is it the DB servers? Any ideas on how I can I fix this?

Update: I was playing today and my in-game ping reached 900ms. I checked the speedtest website and it showed 1ms…

Also tried restarting my router, but nothing changed.

(Matuno) #12

Haha, a speedtest with just 1MS is probably a quirk. 40-80 sounds more likely, but still no good.

Where are you located?

(Tom2160) #13

I live in the South East of England.

(Matuno) #14

Sorry to hear that.

Well, location is not an issue. You mention that your router is plugged into a ‘plug extender’. What’s that?
If that’s one of those things that pass your itnernet connection through power plugs, there’s your issue. If it’s wireless, there’s your issue. If it’s not, well, I’ll explain then.

(Tom2160) #15

By plug extender I mean a multi-plug socket.

(Matuno) #16

Err, a switch?

Right, I do still need to know what the connection from your internet access point to your computer looks like. As far as I can imagine at this point, it’s Modem > Switch > PC.

Open up the command prompt by press the windows logo key + R, then type ‘cmd’ and hit enter. You should be presented with a black old-school prompt.

First, determine your modem’s internal IP address by writing ‘ipconfig’ and hitting Enter. It’s going to spit back a bunch of information, what you’re looking for is the ‘Default gateway’. It probably looks like either 192.168.xx.xx or 10.0.x.x.

Next, type ping -t xxx, where xxx is the number of your gateway, including dots.
It’s going to ping your modem every few seconds. Observe that for a while and see that “time” remains <10ms. If it spikes often, or is generally higher than that, something is defunct between your modem and your computer.

If that looks okay, try the same command, but using 85.236.107.32 instead of xxx. This is one of the game servers.

Additionally, run the command ‘tracert 85.236.107.32’ and post back with the results.

(Tom2160) #17

Yes, it’s as you said, Modem > Switch > PC. I ran the ping -t command and got an average of 3ms, nothing higher than 10ms. Using 85.236.107.32 I was at 63ms and using the last command It started at 20ms finishing at 80ms.
