AutoCad and Radiant

(DAbell) #1

Is there any way of using Autocad to draw buildings and so forth, i know i might have to draw in the same way that you draw brushes in Radiant but being an Autocad designer it would obviously be easier for me. I also use 3dMax 5 and 3dViz which i can import models from AutoCad into so that might be another way of transferring models.

Anybodys input on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I am a bit of a noob when it comes to Radiant mapping so be gentle with me. I previously used Unreal Editor designing maps for Tactical Ops, This Radiant is a completely different beast.

Well I also use Autocad on a full-time basis here at work… and so far I havent been able to find or think of any way it would be possible to correlate the two programs. But then again, I havent really tried.

To me it seems like if you can learn Autocad you should be able to pick up Radiant fairly easy. Radiant is not a tough program to learn… or for that matter, its not even a tough program to use or manipulate. Certainly, it’s no where in the range of a program like 3ds (which you already have experience with).

I say hang in there and work with the program for a few more weeks… You’ll pick it up.

oh and btw… I think using radiant to make your maps instead of Autocad is a much better way to do it anyways.

I thought i might of been asking to much just thought it might of been to cool could of pretended to be working on serious construction issues at work whilst reproducing eastern european architecture. Oh well guess i’ll have to just go back to working like everyone else.

Thanks for the advice though i will keep on trying, i have so far created a great looking landscape put in mg42s in really crappy places and produced a crappy ill proportioned house with no objective, i’m there i think i might release it as a beta soon. Keep em peeled

Autocad can export the 3ds format which max can easily import. Max will import this as a series of splines I think so you might have do some further tweaking once in max. From max you can export in either .ace fromat which is a max default format or if you download the Pop N fresh plugin from http://www.level-designer.de/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewdownload&cid=6 then you can export in .md3 format as well.

.ace and .md3 are the only supported formats for radiant. There’s all kinds of little things that you have to take care of to get models to show up properly in your map and you should be able to find most of the info in this forum by searching for md3 and ace. Ace format is used for static architecture only while md3 for gamemodels and things that might need animation.

P.S.
Good luck trying to find how to properly texture the md3 format…I’ve been into this mapping thingy for two months now and still haven’t figured it out.

I wrote a macro to import *.map files to autocad, it’s not finished yet.
I didn’t have much time to work on this one lately.

Here are samples of 1on1 map import

And the macro if someone finds it useful. Export doesn’t work yet. If someone knows how to get planes from 3D solids in VBA please let me know so I can make export to *.map as well.

So that is an imported map from Radiant into Autocad looking at the pictures, hmm looks good if it goes in surely it can come back out again some how. Well i don’t enough about sort of thing so i could be talking out my ass.

Good work though Red keep it up it seems a useful tool you are working on.
