I love Vassili. I play him almost every match. Having so much play time with him I’ve noticed that sometimes the sniper rifle’s headshot sound bit is a little early. I will occasionally get a good quickscope on somebody while they’re shooting at me. I’ll hear the headshot sound but it won’t deal any damage and I’ll just die right after. It’s not a problem that I’m shooting too late or something but I would rather the sound not be played if I didn’t actually hit them. Hopefully this is fixed and that this post makes any sense. The thing is you don’t get a hitmarker either, I don’t think it’s entirely ping
This is due to a rollback transaction. The netcode in the game tries to take your point of view and the opposing player’s point of view, send that information to the server and the server tries to determine what exactly happened. All in a very small amount of time. Most of the time you’d never notice a small hiccup like what you describe but it happens from time to time on Sniper classes since you can hear the headshots happen but you don’t get the kill. And, despite all weapons being hitscan (meaning bullets are instant), you and another person can kill each other at the same time due to the same reason.
So it’s not an audio desync but the nature of rollback/client side netcode.
Yep, that headshot sound is completely client side related and independent of the server. Otherwise you would have delayed hit sounds on all your shots, and even more so the higher your ping is.
Your client said you got the shot, but in reality due to ping times the other player actually had already killed you first, so your shot ultimately didn’t count.
There is nothing to fix in this regard, its better to just know why it happens and understand why you don’t get those kills in the future.
Remember, just don’t let your keyboard kiss the floor or use mouse to fight with the wall.
