ATTN ATI Users: Roll back to Catalyst 11.3 for possible performance gains

(pinion120) #1

Before I even launched the game I had heard of Brink’s ATI issues. I installed the 11.5a hotfix driver. Horrible FPS stutter in multi, single, and character select.

I read a poster say that he rolled back to 11.3 drivers and it fixed his issue. Uninstalled my 11.5a drivers COMPLETELY, reoobted, installed 11.3 – FPS is now smooth as butter with very minor hitches once in a while to load textures. Nothing out of the norm. Game plays great.

Posting to help other ATI users. My specs below:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6500 2ghz processor
4 gig ram
ATI HD5850 video card
Windows 7 64 bit

Bear in mind this may not work for all users.

We still recommend 11.5a as it includes updates made specifically to work with Brink.

The game was running fine (albeit at about 5-15 FPS) before I updated my ATI/AMD drivers. Since updating to 11.5/11.5a, catalyst keeps crashing and the game won’t start at all (I will post up a report in just a little bit, I’m far too aggravated and frustrated to do it now) and I’m having issues rolling back the drivers to a working configuration.

I’m using 11.2 myself and it is running ok. Still not where it should be, but I am able to play it.

ditto. I had 11.5a installed and had horrible lag when the Steam overlay/pop-ups would appear. Once I removed 11.5a and put on 11.2 that problem went away completely.

Radeon HD 5850

your mileage may vary.

Also, the framerates went up pretty significantly with the older drivers.

Oh was that a hotfix to get rid of the grids? Oh wait they’re still there never mind.

Ive played with 11.3 and 11.5a on a 4870x2 card. No performance gains here.

(Nerfed) #9

intel mobility core 2 duo T6600 @ 2.2GHz
ATI mobility radeon HD 4530
4 GB RAM
11.5

I’m lucky to get maybe 10 fps on parkour this, in the smallest possible window size, with configs and all that installed.

(G3722) #10

4890/AMD Phenom II user here.

Performance is better with the 11.3, thought not really what i would hope for. Still have to turn most, if not all visual options down to get a decent framerate. Grid effect are still on, too.

I tried swapping a bit between 11.3 and 11.5a, it seems about the same for me. 30 fps.
I hope that everyone agrees that I should have at least 60+ with this setup.

I have a 5850 as well and tried rolling back from 11.5a to 11.2 and saw a huge fps gain. Also steam overlay would cause lag before but now it’s silky smooth. Thx!

Still have sound bug though, and when I just tried s_restart in a game I got CTD.

(Splash Damaged) #13

I’m using 11.3 and I don’t see much difference from 11.5a. I’m getting about 45-60 FPS most of the time, drops to 30s and even 20s in open areas. I have a config file that turns everything off. I should be getting 60+ FPS without tweaking the graphics but Splash Damage apparently did not test the game on AMD/ATi machines.

What I found to work for me as a temp fix is to:
Go to brink/directx and install directx
Go to brink/msvc2008sp1 click on vcredist and do a repair

It doesn’t increase frame rates but the game ran smoother in SP and in MP.

(hailey) #15

lol some of these are venturing very far into placebo area

(Macky) #16

LOL, it worked for me so I’m passing it along. Unless you have a technical reason why, on my PC, this doesn’t work? Also, explain why the game comes with directx install files and how that’s also placebo

(Auzner) #17

11.5 and 5a made my video cards unable to do any game or even playback videos; windows would simply freeze. Rolled back to 11.3 and everything works again. So I don’t know if it’s just Brink, but 11.3 is a better driver for my system. Crossfire isn’t working for Brink.

(Macky) #18

They don’t have a CF profile for the game yet as far as I know.

(TaXXuS) #19

I purchased and installed my 6950 this weekend. I ran DriverSweeper to get rid of the nVidia remnants and installed 11.5 and the CAP1 profiles and I have had absolutely no trouble. The game is running smooth as glass with EVERYTHING turned on and maxed out @ 1920x1200.

I am wondering if pieces of previous drivers are causing issues for some.

(Rynji) #20

I am playing with a 5850 and core i5 2500k in 64bit wi7.
11.3 is OK (game feels laggy/choppy but playable). 11.5 is recommended but it made my game CTD after <1 minutes of playing, so i reverted back to 11.3.
