Attention Mappers!

(twt_thunder) #1

I know I wont get popular when I go on asking for this, but things would be much easier for everybody.
today Me and a good friend have been working to try to fix the cherbourg2 map by Komando.
As things sometimes doesnt work as it should and a mapper isnt capable to fix it, I think we all( Not just me)
should release their sources when they are done with the map.

you may freely upload it here:
http://www.thewolfteam.org/upload.php

Thanx
Thunder

True, it’s not only about the maps. It would help to see mods, minimods, scripts, lua and stuff get open source too

(twt_thunder) #3

Totally agree with Micha, Its about time we share our resources to keep this alive, belive me when I say: You will never get a game like this again…

(Teuthis) #4

Absolutely. And Thunder started this already by sharing all These Models.

I’m Not 100% sure what you mean with sources! the Script is already in the Pk.3 file, the Textures and Models too. Only Piece missing is the Map file. Or do you mean sharing Stuff That Can legally be Used by everyone, like your Models  ?

I was actually thinking today about a Big Big Library of prefabs so That One can assemble the brushwork in a Minimum of Time…

I’m happy to Share the Map file and all Free Sounds I Used. Importantly many Free Sounds Are Free to use but they have to be acknowledged properly in the readme file. So I suggest whatever we Share there Must be all the Time a declaration of how to Cite/acknowledged Other peoples work.

Well, I reworked Nordwind and fixed Huertgen Forest, and I’ll like to do this again for Antwerp at least

It’s time consuming because you have to go through structural/detail stuff and rework the shader to use SimonOC and not PCX method, do some VIS (the Allied spawn of Cherbourg has a horrible FPS rate…), improve and fix the entities/script, but people liking these maps are just waiting for this to happen

Not started yet because I have already too much stuff started @@

Oh, and about releasing source, yup  Wait a bit after the public release to be sure it is bug free and then np for the newbies it’s all good

What happens when TWT goes down? Are the files easily transferable to another host?

Also should there be an agreed upon way to upload the files (so it’s easy to find the one you want later)? Map per map or just all 1000 map files in 1 zip and upload them all? If it’s map per map can you allow uploading .map files since putting each source into a zip will be a lot of work.

Maybe try to work together with a website like wolffiles.de to categorize all of the files and maybe even link the map pk3 file to the source file.

(Mateos) #7

Programming a tool which browse a folder, lists the MAP files, and compress them all one by one, using their name to name the ZIP, and put all the ZIPs in a programmed folder.

Yes and I dont have plans to take this site down for years yet  . It all depends on activity on site. If there havent been like one visitor for a whole year… well then even I have to realize that ET is in fact dead.
But for what I’ve seen after starting up thewolfteam the game is far from dead.
TWT is soon one year (hurray) and we’re still getting site members and team members.
I think we still got a bright future for some years… atleast until someone takes a hint and remake the game^^.

I’ve by the way have the same webhost since I became a member here on SD forums and I got other sites running there too. And really 80Nkr in a year I will gladly pay to keep the domain
And as you might have noticed I have ads on the site and its starting to give some income, If I am lucky this site + the others with ads will pay the hosting account once a year. It seems like I am gonna reach that ammount this year as I did last. Dont earn money on it but it keeps the hobby alive and sharing a lot of fun.
A Giga big thx to Mateos,acQu and Jenkins who went with me on this Idea.

If it’s map per map can you allow uploading .map files since putting each source into a zip will be a lot of work

Well the idea with a zip is to include the files you need as the prt file and such. I dont know how browsers would handle a map file on download either, but ofcourse we can try. takes a minute to do so wouldnt be any problem

Maybe try to work together with a website like wolffiles.de to categorize all of the files and maybe even link the map pk3 file to the source file.

As far as I know schnoog is a member on site and he can pm me with whatever he wants  can even provide an ftp account to our downloads if he needs it.
And he and others are free to link to our downloads I dont care

Oh, and about releasing source, yup Wait a bit after the public release to be sure it is bug free and then np for the newbies it’s all good

This is ofcourse the general Idea, you dont release source of something you are currently working on.But like me, someone might get tired of the maps error or dont know how to solve balance in the map and stop working on it. Then its a good Idea to release it so others can work further on it.
( I have done this with all my maps I’ve stopped working on, you find them in the map source category)

I’m Not 100% sure what you mean with sources!

.map file and if nessecary the prt and other.Rest they can find in the original pk3

And ofcourse if you got prefabs, wav files, textures you want to share this is cool to AS long as it is legal.

True, it’s not only about the maps. It would help to see mods, minimods, scripts, lua and stuff get open source too

This must best be done by svn I think…

So more thoughts? dont hesitate to share them
This is just an friendly approch to make things better for all parts, new mappers , even old mappers ^^ ,
modders and well the whole comunity.

Since you are Talking about new mappers getting Maybe attracted, I have a Ton of Tutorials collected over the Last 10 years. I basically made from everything I Found useful a PDF as I was Not sure whether I find everything when I will need it. I’m happy to Share the whole Package (includes also Testmaps, scripts, all sort of prefabs, Command posts, scriptmover bla bla). Since I copied everything together over a Decade have no clue whether I am legally allowed to make all this third Party Stuff available. Many Sides I Took them from are likely Not Alive anymore. Also some Tutorials Are in German but I guess the Prínciple gets Clear. However, no idea about the legal side to publish third Party intellectual property.

(Mateos) #10

Have you also taken the time to include the sources? :x (The websites links, etc.)

(Teuthis) #11

For Most of the PDF yes, there is the Website on the PDF. However, for lots of Testmaps, scripts and prefabs only good Knows who owns the intellectual property.
