Attack Archer Merc.

I am probably a vocal minority and I don’t know how possible it is but my favorite part of seeing fps’s is seeing archers in the game. I know that an arrow is different from a gun and you would need new mechanics for it but it would be amazing to see an archer in game because it would add a different style to the gameplay and possibly add more audience.

I figure the archer would have similar health and speed of Vassili (100HP & 420SP).

Obviously a bow with variants of
Compound- low accuracy, high dmg, high redraw time
Longbow- high accuracy, medium dmg, medium redraw time
re-curve- medium accuracy, low dmg, low redraw time

Silenced quick secondary gun weapon

For devices one device could be a different interesting way to get arrows for your bow. (assuming they can’t get arrows from normal ammo drops)

Another could be to have a device that slows and disorientates the enemy.

Again, I don’t know how possible this is but it would be amazing to see.

I kind of like your idea… But my main problem with your merc is that he/she doesn’t seem to have any teamwork or objective-based aspects. You compare him/her to Vassili, but Vass at least has his motion sensors and is great for covering enemy delivery points/friendly planted C4.
It’s actually a main reason for why a lot of people don’t like Phantom - he’s a merc who is terrible at objective play (because if he tries to interact with objectives his shield gets taken off immediately and he’s useless against EVs - plus he’s slow so he’s not very good at carrying objectives), has no team-based aspects (he can’t heal/revive/give ammo/spot enemies).
Even mercs like Fragger and Nader are at least good at covering objectives, taking down enemy health stations and Rhinos, damaging generators and EVs - which makes him not completely useless at playing the objective and getting rid of health stations (which other mercs are really bad at).

I think for this new merc of yours to have a postitive effect on the gameplay of Dirty Bomb, he/she would have to either be able to give ammo/health OR bring something new to the table (such as how Redeye brings the ability to smoke objectives so that your team can hide while they repair EVs/interact with C4/deliver objectives, as well as being used for a whole bunch of other uses [-see any game of CS:GO for the range of uses for smoke grenades].

Perhaps if this new merc was able to fire small health packs and small ammo packs from long distance at friendlies by using his/her bow, that might make him/her a useful and interesting class, rather than another gimmick like Phantom who exists solely for pub-stomping.

I agree with this. The only real thought I gave to this was the bows. Any modifications is fine by me but I just mainly wanted the archer idea out there. P.S. I really want to switch compound and longbow redraw times, so longbow isn’t too powerful.

Sonny boy, you ain’t the first to want an archer Merc. I guaran-damn-tee you that.

Thing is, if you kill the archer before he can pull back his bowstring, you’re fine. Sniper Rifle - No drawback time, High Damage, High accuracy. Bow<Gun.

(Sin) #6

If you an archer, then you don’t want to be seen at all. It’s not always about what’s better, it’s what makes the game fun. Also, this is a video game, realistic drawback times don’t have to be a five minute thing and snipers do take a short time to aim down sight don’t they?

(Samniss_Arandeen) #7

One second to nock an arrow, two seconds to draw+fire from nocked. That sounds fine to me.

I class bow+arrow weapons as battle rifles the likes of BR-16 or Dreiss or Grandeur. They have similar size, effective range, lack of zoom, etcetera. I wouldn’t mind giving a B&A sniper-rifle damage to compensate for the arrow travel time and drop combined with the terrible RoF.

On the other hand, a bow and arrow is almost completely silent. This could be used to an advantage.

(gg2ez) #8

Sure. If you can adequately hide yourself. Snipers don’t suffer from drawback time fatigue. With a bow, the accuracy of an arrow goes off drastically when the bow has been drawn back for too long. Snipers can just spot the enemy aim and fire. Archers have to spot the enemy, pull the bowstring, aim, fire. Sniper’s scope can zoom in on frequently trafficked areas without risk of detaining their accuracy. Unless this archer has mechanical arms, he’s gonna have a hard time denying doorways.

(Sin) #9

gg2ez, Compound bows were literally made so you can pull back and hold back for hours. Once again, we are talking about a game. Where fatigue shouldn’t be an issue.

(gg2ez) #10

Just because you’re talking about a game doesn’t mean you can overlook real attributes of weapons. If weapon recoil is a thing, so should fatigue. Plus, compound bows are just 1 type of bow out of the three you’ve suggested.

Unless this merc can be made into a more offensive and less “from the shadows”-y, there really isn’t a reason to use this over Vas. This idea would be really good as a singular assault type merc. It would be great as an assault type because some really interesting gameplays could be made. I like the idea of pinning and temporarily immobilising people with arrows and finishing with a Tølen or something.

(Sin) #11

The compound bow was an example, and again, this merc is open to change. Simple fix, don’t hold your bow string back for too long. Also, I know that it doesn’t necessarily correlate with the weapon aspect but I can run for hours in the game, with no fatigue. Also, the use for this merc is to kill. Kill everyone they can (More damage to players and not to objectives)

i would love to see an archer  i love arcery in real life and its always special to see it in a game. i think it would be cool if they had fire arrows and like they could light a line.path on fire (thats probably too far out there) but yeah if theres and archer im buying it

Just give the bow to phantom? It will make him more interesting to play and it will fit his style.
