attach one entity to another...

(Roeltje) #1

I am already busy a whil trying to understand Tanks
I still dont get how they for example let the target_smoke stay at the same spot of the tank…
I dunno if im right if i think it works with attachtotag… if it is so, how does it works then?
where do i find/make tags?

plz help me :stuck_out_tongue:

greetz,

attachtotag <targetname> <tagname>
Connect this entity onto the tag of another entity. (Models have tags, like the truck model?).

attatchtotrain <targetname> <length>
Makes this entity follow another entity with a specified distance (only works in combination with followpath).

I’ve never used attatchtotrain.
See script commands here: http://simland.planetquake.gamespy.com/ldr1_1/appendix_a.htm

I already knew that… but still thanks
but… my aqtual question was:
Where can i find what all tags are or add tags?

(kamikazee) #4

A quick way to find out what tags are in a model is to oped the tag file with notepad.
There will be lots of weird characters, but at some places you’ll be able to read text. This works for the model files as well.
Don’t save though, or your models are corrupt.

The other way to get to know them (and add them) is through a 3D modelling program. I don’t know if Milkshape shows these, I’m not an expert in modelling and exporting.

(No1_sonuk) #5

Last time I tried it, Milkshape doesn’t import the tags.
Max or Gmax does.

(Shaderman) #6

You can see which tags a model contains with LithUnwrap (Freeware).

(kamikazee) #7

Too bad that I get errors when I tried to open a model like the Blitz truck.

(Shaderman) #8

Which model? Blitzbody.md3? Which errors do you get? I’ve never had problems with this software

(kamikazee) #9

It just says “there was an error reading the file”.

As far as I know, those model files are ok.

(Shaderman) #10

Strange. Maybe something like a space in the path to the model?

(kamikazee) #11

I don’t think so, I can open models\mapobjects\vehicles\wagon_tilt.md3 from the same ET install.

Thanks for the quick reply, I’ll try to sort it out or try some importer for a 3D modelling program.

(Shaderman) #12

Maybe you’ll get some hint in the log file “unwrap.log”.

(Shaderman) #13

Here’s the version 1.3 I use. The download I’ve posted above doesn’t seem to be ok.

(Roeltje) #14

and when u do attachtotag to a tag that doesnt exist what then? does it create a new one or does it give an error?

(Shaderman) #15

Tags are parts of models and are not created “on the fly”. AFAIK you won’t get an error if you try to attach to a non existing tag. You need an existing tag or it won’t work.

(kamikazee) #16

That one works, thank you. Seems the author didn’t make a new version out of it. Bah…

I hijacked enough of this thread, cary on with usual bussiness.

(No1_sonuk) #17

and when u do attachtotag to a tag that doesnt exist what then?

Not sure, but it might default to the model (or the script_mover) origin.

“You need an existing tag or it won’t work.”

As far as i can see, trying to attach a model to a non-existing tag, will attach the model at the origin of the destination-model.

Any entity that cannot be attached to another entity, like a shooter_rocket, will not produce an error…It just doesn’t work then, and nothing is attached. The entity You are trying to attach will remain at its world-coördinates.
