Atmospheric music in the levels.

So lately I’ve been playing a lot STALKER and Half-Life 2 (**** ravenholm btw) and one thing I always enjoy in those games is the use of music. Which is more ambient and less in the face except on specific moments. It’s something I asked before ingame and which I got a negative answer on. however, I do personally believe that awesome sounding ambient tracks really could add to the experience since it also helps setting the mood of a particular area/map.

Now a track plays when the time is almost over, but I’d like the music per stage becoming more urgent.

I leave you with this awesome snippet of music:

You named single player games as examples, where this music fits very well. Though in multiplayer games it’s distracting, as I myself want to concentrate at least. And on pub I turn my own music on.

Yes, get rid of the music on multiplayer maps, or at least make it a clientside/serverside option!

The first time it might be fun, but after a few times it becomes annoying as hell.
It´s one of the things that alot of players could strangle you for if they have to listen to it every damn time.
Just because Battlefield does it, does not mean you should do it, too.

(Volcano) #4

they could just release a soundtrack so people like OP can listen to it

(Nail) #5

no repetitive audio, it’s just wrong

(Seiniyta) #6

I find games like Planetside 2, Battlefield 3 doing it pretty well. Meh.

What would be slightly better than music just playing over the top would be music playing out of radio’s. Might not fit in seeing as it has been 2 years since the bomb going off but would be a nice touch. I personally dislike the music that starts playing towards the end of London Bridge. Very off putting. I would much rather have an option to have the music on/off or do away with it completely.

(iwound) #8

definitely needs a lot more atmospheric sounds. with a toggle on/off. i’d prefer on.
basically anything that can should.
the rats always get me every time. add a small rustle and squeak perfick.
pottys radio, things falling in the distance.
ev, lights hum, wind, trees. we’re probably due an atmos sound pass.

re music, off always and that end theme. musics just not suited to mp.

Yes, as long I can toggle off the music, I have no problem with it.
I don’t like musics in a FPS, it’s generally one thing that I remove quickly in the options. As Iwound, what I except to listen is the noise of environment, and more important, the footstep of the ennemy which sneaks behind me.

It makes me remember one thing on ETQW. I crashed my airplane on a hill, just behind an enemy strogg lying down and firing on my teamates.
He doesn’t hear my crash (!!). For the fun, I ran (In etqw, you can hear when a ennemy is breathless) and jumped multiple times on its legs. No reaction.

One of my prefered FPS for the sound is “The hunter”(http://www.thehunter.com/). The sound of environment is immersive, and very important for the gameplay.
Thief 1/2 are really good for this, the sound spatialization is perfect and the atmosphere is impressive.

Hell yeah. As important as footsteps are in multiplay, I have to agree that Thief 2 is still probably the best use of spatial audio awareness I’ve experienced, single or multiplay. You really felt you could gauge the proximity of enemy foot steps, grunts and so on after playing just a couple of levels. Very easy to pick up and very natural, albeit in an extremely heightened state of awareness.

It’s been awhile since I’ve felt like a multiplay game really needed headphones. I mean like they were absolutely essential, where a 5.1 speaker setup felt like a huge handicap. Even in Crysis 2/3 with that stealth dynamic, I still felt like I could get away without headphones.

I would always end up turning the music off during the actual game because it makes it harder to hear where people are coming from.

In the menus however I think a good soundtrack is a must, just like in ET:QW - which is still my favourite of all time.

(Seiniyta) #12

Of course there should be the “music” sound slider to turn it off. And wiht music I do really mean more ambient music in most of the level except when it get’s really close.

(RasteRayzeR) #13

I can’t remember any ET having musics in game, it’s true that some could bring up the mood. But this is multiplayer, so it would have to be either dynamical, or just ambient … plus when you play like 400x a map, you get sick of the music and disable it anyway.

(Seiniyta) #14

I played over 500 games of starcraft 2 and I actually myself never disabled the background music. But I guess that’s different to everyone.

(Loffy) #15

ye, no music in multiplayer. but, as you say, the music in HL2 and Stalker is pure brilliant. Potty, I agree with you: music should come from radios ingame, if ever.

(OwNLY) #16

In RTS good music is a must-have.

But in FPS Multiplayers it´s a definite NO.

(Rex) #17

Haha, the destructible radios in ET were epic.

anything from FO1 really

(iwound) #19

Best sound effect on ET from a radio.
