Asymmetric sides/teams. Thoughts?

I thought about what was unique in ETQW and some other games like l4d, starcraft, that were very fun to play and to watch.

It was balance of the different asymmetric sides.
Strogg had shields, stroyent refill of health or ammo, spawn-hosts, and different vehicles
GDF had health and ammo boxes, and also different vehicles.

Can we try to do similar thing in DirtyBomb?
Some mercs are on one side, and some mercs are on the other?

Maybe not like in ETQW - where Stroggs always attacked on Arc, and defended on the Valley.

Some logical thought on this:

  • defenders get more defensive mercs. More engies, if the maps need engies (a lot of c4 defuses etc). Medics - more Aura and Sawbonez, less Phoenix (he seems more like an attacking kind of medic)
  • attackers get more offensive mercs.

SD doesnt really bother with asymmetric sides I think. I had a post including this a while ago, and even tho I don´t really know how they think about this, other changes like the fact that every merc can do every objective induce that they want every merc to be playable at every given time. They want the people who spend money for the mercs to be able to play them as much as they want, and dont care about intersting game mechanics they need to remove because of that.

I was under the impression that mercs were going to be tailored for attacking sides and defending sides anyway but they weren’t going to brute force the idea.

You know what would make every round Asymmetric???

A draft mode… I would be happy with your suggestion to try but I honestly feel that simply giving one Merc per player per round would have the same kinda results.

Only for competitive mode then tho, cause I don´t see drafts or simple picks phases in pub games. Even if the min. game time would be extended to 7 minutes, some games would only take those 7 minutes (or at the current state less) and then you pick again für some minutes, do the load screen and stuff?

Oh totally…
I have actually always made a point in previous posts that I think this should be for matchmaking only and all public games should allow ALL mercs to be played (not even the 3mercs you have now but all the mercs in the game you have unlocked).

draft mode is indeed asymmetric, but it is unfair as well. if i got it right - first guys get ‘best’ mercs.

and game-dictated pre-selected sides are more fair in the eyes of a gamer.

and yes…i heard about your 1 merc thingy…

Actually if it was a REAL draft mode the way it is balanced out is that FIRST pick chooses 1 Merc and SECOND pick chooses 2 Mercs so while first pick may get the BEST merc (in this case Sawbones) the second team gets the next too (Kira and Thunder maybe). then the bans and following picks actually balance really nicely

Also normally a team captain would do the picks with input from the team then the team choose who they will play out of the 5 picked Mercs

Honestly, i will not prbbly play that kind of game. with that class-changing style, that i used to play in ETQW and to lesser extent in ET (after etqw) i just get bored, if i stick to the same kind of tactics for more than a minute =) a minute is more than enough to decide whether you tax is working or not.

Don’t drafts usually work that team A gets first pick and then team B get second and third and then 2 picks alternately until team B get 1 final pick?

Correct

I think drafting is a terrible fit for this fps, especially one where you are meant to change characters as desired (between a set you pre-select) and are limited to characters you already own.

I don’t even agree with needing asymmetric sides. ETQW wasn’t even a particularly successful game, l4d is far from a competitive mp like xt, and starcraft isn’t asymmetric, it just has 3 choices. You aren’t forced into an “asymmetric” experience any more than a medic fighting a soldier. You are just as likely to face a mirror match than you are to face another race. I just wouldn’t call that a real asymmetric experience and I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone call it that before now.

When I think asymmetric fps, I think natural selection 1/2. Both sides play completely different. This is not the gameplay experience XT/db is meant to be. And forcing people into different/unique characters will not make it asymmetric either.
