Area hidden from spectators

(leifhv) #1

I need to create an area (that contains an secret object) that is not accessible to spectators and my first plan is to create a room that can only be reached by crawling through a tunnel.

It seems to me that spectators are a bit taller than prone (crawling) players so I think this should work, but maybe there is special technique for spectators that I don’t know about that can be used to reach such areas?

My backup solution is to just create a small vault(safe) with a player operated door. The vault will not be big enough to enter but the player can look in and see the ‘secret object’. The spectator will not be able to open the door…but he might be able to look over the shoulder of the player I guess…depending on how I design this area.

Any thoughts about this or any suggestions for better solutions?

Hi!
Secret areas are always cool.
Im not sure that a door will stop spectators. I think they can “fly” through doors.
The ideal thing would be if there was such a thing as a texture that stopped spectators and nothing else. Like a Clip-texture but only for spectators.

In my case it’s really the object in the area that is secret…it’s essential that the spectators can not see this object.

If I use my vault solution the door will not be big enought to ‘fly through’. It will only be possible to open it to see into the vault and look at the secret object.

simple: make the object only appear if a player is nearby via a trigger or button that will raise it through the floor. for example you could create a room with a vault in the middle that is clipped so players and spectators can’t walk over it and look down (maybe add some black fog) and with a secret button the object floats from the deep into the room. then make it disappear after some time

Check the Password2 map: there the secret code is hidden behind a wall until someone presses a button and reveals it.

My newest solution now is that the object is only viewable from far away. This way only players using a scoped weapon or binoculars is able to see the specific details of the object.

(I’m planning on using a fence and a clipbrush to restrict close access to the object both for players and spectators)

Are there any way for spectators to zoom into far away objects? I guessing that Punkbuster will restrict extreme FOV values…?

Any reasons this is not a good plan? =)
