Try
com_hunkmegs 64
r_picmip 3

Setting your hunkmegs high when you have very little ram causes longer load times and much more swapping. r_picmip 3 will lower your memory requirements quite a bit.

(Vaibhav) #23

ive tried those values and i still get disconencted. shall i try lowering them more?

(CM..Punk) #24

Of course, but moderately accurate core readings are most common, and I’m guessing that’s the case here since he did have troubles.

It’s only down to 55 when idling now. This is with 3 fans and the case off =/ Still goes up to 62 when playing ET but it doesn’t crash so that’s something I guess.

(SCDS_reyalP) #25

not likely to help.

About how long does it take you to load a map ?

(Vaibhav) #26

its takes me bout 1 minute to 3 minutes loading.

(Lekdevil.NL) #27

Well, there’s your problem. That’s much too long; the server will have disconnected you by the time you finished loading the map.

You should really get more RAM. 512 MB will be plenty.

(Vaibhav) #28

k thanks ill invest in more ram when i get sum cash. (donation r welcome…lol)

(SCDS_reyalP) #29

Lekdevil.NL is right, but you should be able to do a little better than that if you turn of all unneeded applications, and turn your memory setting to the minimum that will work. If you have raised soundmegs or zonemegs above the default, turn them back down. AFAIK, 56 is the default for hunkmegs, so you could try that too. Some larger maps might not work at all.

normal operation for my pc is 36-38 degrees. When I play ET it can go as high as 47 degrees, but that’s fine. When I had all my crashing problems, the temperature was rising above 60 degrees and beyond.

I invested in a £5.00 ‘clip’ desktop fan which is permanately facing the cpu and graphics card - simple and cheap solution.

Specs are 1.2Ghz AMD Thunderbird (known for it’s heat)
1Gb PC133 Ram (yup, PC133)
4xAGP nVidia Ti4200
PCI SoundBlaster 5.1 card
KTP133 VIA motherboard
DirectX 9
latest nvidia drivers taht are ok with PB (I forget the version)
last known good BIOS update
last known good VIA 4in1Drivers

yada yada - I run Windows 2000 as an excuse for an O/S - no problems in terms of fps - simple as.

Consider ghosting a barebones install of your chosen O/S along with only the required drivers for your hardware and an install of ET and <insert your fave game here>.

Don’t download and install anything from the net with this version of your O/S install and make sure you consult a decent techy page about disabling windows services that can either compromise your secuirty or hit the net - btw, I use sygate personal firewall over and above zonealarm or any other ‘fancy’ free firewall software - it works for me.

Disable any antivirus stuff you may have running also.

Unless you have load balancing software, don’t play and download @ the same time either.

Spybot & Adaware are good to purge your system of any spyware and should be done at regualr intervals - tip to the wise, steer clear of porn sites.

my $0.02…

k basically the comp im currently using is the only one comp ive got and ive had it for bout 2 yrs now. running windows xp(thinking of moving to linux)
i have panda anti-virus. mcaffe personal firewall plus , lavasoft adwatch , roboform , incredimali, spyware guard and spyware blaster running in background.
(i did hav spygate firewall till i got a trojan(before i had panda). then spygate got really annoying. i also had zonealarm free but dat also didnt work for me. ive had kerio too but for sum reason they kept askin me to buy it so got rid of dat. ive tried Agnitum firewall but the settings werre msessed up on dat so got rid of dat.)
ive also used Blackviper’s site (http://www.blackviper.com) to disable uncessary stuff. for my porn stuff i use usenets. its imposssible for me to downlaod and play at same time cos i only got 150 k internet speed.

and how can i check temp of my hardrive etc? (widout buying anythin…)

:drink:

(SCDS_reyalP) #32

http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

is a decent free hardware monitoring app. It will usually only show you CPU and system temp (usually somewhere on the mobo), and these are often not very accurate (it is the sensors that poorly calibrated, not a fault of the software).

You should be able to close the adwatch and spyware stuff while playing. There may also be some XP services you can turn off. But really, more RAM is going to be the best solution. Even if you can only scrounge an extra 128 somewhere. Linux will likely have less overhead, especially if you stay away from the eyecandy desktop systems, but it could be a lot of effort to get it working right.

(evilsock) #33

Memory increase - agreed  easiest bang for buck there is tbh.

BTW, Sygate won’t stop you getting a trojan, but it’s doing it’s job if it moans about security alerts. Don’t just get rid of it as a result, investigate the root cause and remedy.

Memory aside, sounds like some time could be very well spent cleaning your machine up, making sure that background apps and services aren’t ‘stealing’ bandwidth - hell, I even have ICMP requests disabled and sygate is set to query every request for internet access a program may make.

Also, it’s been said before and I’ll repeat it again, time spent tweaking your ET config is time well spent - checkout the latest compo PB cvars etc and set your config accordingly - it’ll make all the difference in the end.

HTH

(Vaibhav) #34

k i got dat temp check sodtware. it shows 55 in red and 41 in black. i also turend of the background services only leaving ant-virus and firewall running. didnt help at all…

and where is the “checkout the latest compo PB cvars”?

I was having this same issue, updated all my drivers ran 10,000 virus, spyware, adware, and trojan scans, moved my powersupply outside my case, reintsalled et, but it still reset after a few minutes of gameplay evertime. I swore up and down it wasn’t overheating because I had problems in the past and went overboard on cooling, my bios said the cpu was at 50’c which should be fine. Upon further inspection I found that the fan on my video card was seized and full of dust/dirt. I replaced the fan w/ a radio shack special but the card was already fried. So I had to buy a radeon. Anyway, the advice that this problem is caused by imminent hardware failure or overheaing is probably true so check out your whole system. thanks for the help and keep making sweet games.
