briefing “The Axis have constructed a secret factory deep in the south of France where they have been manufacturing large hidden caches of secret weaponry. In order to succeed, the Allied troops must invade the elusive factory and disable the High-Voltage Generator. Symotaneously, the Axis must defend against the onslaught by building a Gate and Command Post while protecting the Generator from Allied Engineers.”

TBH, I didn’t really like it … at this stage of the build. Here’s what I didn’t like about it, as well as some other comments, and what I think you can do:

  1. My FPS stayed high overall - good job!. You might want to review what brushes are structural and which are detail though, because I was in a lot of hallways where I was only getting 100 or so FPS, when I should have been pushing 140, given the lack of large, spacious, or detailed areas on either side of the hallway

  2. Replace the world sound, fan, and whurring wav files with speakers by using the speaker editor - that will cut out 2.5 Mb. I was hearing birds chirping even when underground and it feels very odd. The sound file that triggers when the flags are captured just don’t sound right to me either. That however, is a personal opinion. A better option would be an edited vo like “Depot Captured”

  3. You need a lot more lights. There is one cooridor in particular (L-cooridor with a branch at 45 degrees which ends at a team door) that had no lights - it’s pitch black. There are many other cooridors and areas which are just very dark.

Also, the lights around the truck (at least I only found one truck) made it look very drab, and not really worth the extra Mb in file size it contributes. If you feel that you need to keep it in because it’s such a cool truck (and it is a very nice truck) then you need to emphasis it with proper lighting

  1. I think you went overboard with the posters. While I liked the diversity of the graphics you put up, they are too in your face and as a result, take away from the experience. I think you could probably do with fewer posters, change the size by 50-66%, and put them in frames. I like putting them into 2x4 unit wood frames with the actual poster being only 1 unit thick. The other thing I think you can do with the posters is to have a common theme - e.g. German propaganda posters (“work harder”). Right now, you have some period posters (German, American, French, Irish), some anime, some softcore porn, a couple of other things I couldn’t identify … and they are all over the place. I the PK3 has 56 graphics

  2. Signage. Good idea with the directional signs on the floor, but I think they could be replaced with signs on the wall saying Generator —>. The allies should know they need to blow the generator, so it’s logical to follow the signs saying “Generator”. The floor arrows look more at home in a Quake CTF map rather than a German factory

  3. Clipping. There are a couple of places where you can get stuck and have to /kill out. The one place that comes to mind is all the crates behind the truck. Either move the crates together so that you can’t fall in between them or clip them off

  4. Dimensions of your sidewalks. It feels like a 16-unit step from the ground up to the sidewalk, which personally, I dislike. I prefer 12-unit steps and 8-unit curbs - they feel like they flow better to me. However, that’s a purely preference thing to me.

Other stuff comes to mind, but I don’t have time to write it up.

Yeah, this was actually the second time that I have built this map, and now it is time to tear down the map and rebuild it into a third one. I actually have some similar opinions about the map as you do, but with all things they are learning experiences and all the more reason to do things better the next time around.

I’m not sure if you have ever been into counterstrike, but many of the concepts in the map are based sort of upon the same principle as the maps in the day of defeat mod [sounds and concepts in general]. I’m actually tempted to make a couple of maps with capturable flagpoles and long streatches of buildings and roads, some of my favorite maps are like this …

I realize that I come across pretty harsh (other mappers have made the same comment), but I’ll always try to highlight a point I think can be fixed as well as describe what I think you can do to fix it. IMO, it’s better than just saying, “great job” or “it sucks” without providing any detail why. My first map got shelved but was a great learning experience. Parts of it have made their way into several other maps of mine, including another one that got shelved :frowning:

I don’t know,I actually think there are some people who will actually like playing the map for what it is worth. I’m thinking that I’ll release a new updated version of the map sometime in the next week with bounced lighting and some of the poorer aspects of the map corrected and strengthened. Some things you mentioned as well as other things.

There are a lot of lights without lightbulbs… maybe you forgot to include the cagelight.md3 model in the .pk3?

Also, you’ve set up quite a bit of defense around the Forward Spawn… but it seems the Allied team can get to it within like ten seconds… maybe you should move the initial Allied Spawn back about five-ten seconds.

Otherwise it’s probably one of the better maps to come out of a beginner.

Yeah, I consider it a learning experience … I figure I’ll just keep rewritting the map until I get it to a point that is balanced and where people will want to host it on their servers; if they’ll touch it after looking at my first few attempts anyways.

I’m considering a lot of what you guys say … I personally like the way the map is designed conceptually, but would like to make it better. I use to have it so that the Allies had to go up the stairs and through the upper portion to get to where the Axis were spawning with the flag, but felt that was too constrictive. Maybe I could have it so that the game spawns the Aliied team a few seconds later than the Axis or something so they could have more time to set-up the gate; in a way that wouldn’t be annoying of course …

About the lights, I never set any of the fixtures up, although I couldmake it look like there are some lighting fixtures for the sake of realism.

Better is “Angriff auf die Fabrik”.

Also, Nullskillz hat mir gesagt, dass “Angriff der Fabrik” besser war … Soviel ich wiess hoert es gut aber auf english um und auch auf aehnlicher weise auf deutsch so habe den Name gewaehlt … Deutsch ist nicht meine erste sprache, immerso folge ich jeder der fliessiger deutsch spricht und nicht immer mich selbst … Ob er unrecht sei weiss ich auch nicht …
