Oh, really ?
Please note that there were multiple signs shown by the community in the past about the rooting quality since SD (as I suppose, backed by multiplay right from the start) took charge of the server’s side of things. I still have no clue about the ping most west European people have on Stockholm servers. A regular dsl player receive 80 or 90 ms ping on those, while fibre cable players are generally around 60, which is still huge and not explainable if things have been done right.
Again, there’s been a small but still significant part of the community raising concerns about the overall quality of servers right from the begining, even during closed beta. Nexon was going the right way in the last days, but still below what is achievable with proper work on server tunings, and SD never surpassed this level further down the line.
As long as they won’t listen, they’ll be at mercy by the gross work multiplay does with UE3 servers.
What leverage do they have ? Pretty much nothing, the overall income multiplay does with the whole dirty bomb renting service (Community servers AND DB official servers) is lower than any single big title community servers income they could do.
The recipes are pretty well known to anyone who had the opportunity to maintain a UE3 game where hitreg and lag issues are a real concern. Don’t stack servers on a same machine, hardware reboot the server once a day, make sure the tickrate set in the server parameters are actually reachable for it. UE3, including the server binaries, has never been originally developed with multi core computers in mind, and by extension multitasking. Not to mention root UE3 binaries issues that are real as well.
For the sake of this game, just give us server binaries we could send on a random high broadband multi-use server we could dedicate on running a single DB server. And see how well a server hosted on such cheap system fares compared to what multiplay provides.
Multiplay is part of why I refused to put a fiver on server hosting on DB. The AIE community ran a public community for almost a year, I’ll always be thankful about that. But I shared my real concerns with Shoe before the shitstorm happened. And having one of the oldest supporting community dropping their arms off on that field, if they can’t take this as a sign, well, I don’t know what to say.
