Ambient Occlusion issues on ATI

(abelthorne) #1

Hello,
I have a similar problem with an ATI Radeon HD 5770. I’ve updated the driver to the last version today (11.11) and when activating ambient occlusion, the game is really dark (in some areas, like the first part of Aquarium, it’s almost unplayable because it’s too dark). I had lots of problems with Brink crashing with previous drivers and did not really test AO before today, so I don’t know if it worked better with a specific driver version.

Here are two screenshots without/with ambient occlusion taken on Refuel:

We’ve not been able to reproduce this on the same card.

Can you confirm you are not running any 3rd-party config files or command line options.

No config file, no command line options. Also, I since reverted back to 11.6 Catalyst drivers as every following version (including 11.11) makes Brink randomly crash to desktop.

Try the different settings for Catalyst AI in your Catalyst Control Center. Sometimes performance optimisations in the drivers can have unexpected results for specific games.

I’ve deactivated Catalyst AI, which seemed to bring more problems than solutions in games.

Exactly what setting are you using for Catalyst AI?

(abelthorne) #7

I don’t know. I unchecked the option that says “activate Catalyst AI”. I’ll try to update again to 11.11 drivers and make a few tests but I’m not really looking forward to having crashes back in the middle of matches…

I’ve had crashes in Brink with 11.7, 11.8, 11.9 and 11.11 (didn’t test 11.10), which range from game freezing (I have to kill it from the process manager) to game crashing to desktop without any error or info.

As for ambiant occlusion, I have tested in th latest drivers (11.11) and with the current one that I use (11.6) and have the problems seen on my scrrenshots above with both versions.

Maybe I should open a new thread for the crashes problems ?

It’s ok, I’ll create one and merge your posts across.

I’d be interested in seeing if different Catalyst AI settings change things. Also it’d be good if you posted your DxDiag.
