Am I a rarity?

(`Ghost`) #1

I recently bought this game. Two days ago to be exact. I am LOVING it. I dont have any of the problems people have with crashes or lag or FPS issues. I also dont see or havent experienced any in game bugs either. The game is great and fun. late at night servers get a bit scarece but durnig the day i see about 4 or 5 servers full, with a string of other populated servers.

I hope the DLC will bring more people in to the game, and that quakecon will really open people up to it aswell.

I’m with you on that

I admit, I’m somewhat jaded because I got the game at launch.

In its launch state it was completely unacceptable, now it feels like SD is just playing catch up and trying to improve the game by making it how it should have been at launch. It’s disappointing to have to wait for months and a lot of players have totally given up as a result.

The game seemed completely untested:
sound didn’t work properly on 2 maps: If it was tested how does something like that get missed?
It was unplayable online: Again, if it was tested, how does something like that get missed?

Now that the game has been properly tested, by those of us who bought the game on launch, problems are being addressed. It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you feel like you paid $60 for what most would consider a beta.

If I were to buy the game now for $30, or however much you can find it now, combined with the fact that some issues have been ironed out, I’d be much more satisfied.

I still stand by the fact that the game doesn’t have much content though. There’s a lot of fluff - the character customization for instance, but there’s not a ton of core game underneath it. Even the SMART system, something that could potentially add a whole new dynamic and make the game feel fresher feels dull and more like an accessory since the maps aren’t designed very well to take advantage of the system. It feels more like just a sprint button, which is nothing new to the fps genre. Brink is fun in short bursts, but not a game I could play for more than hour or so at a time - the lack of content makes it feels like an Xbox Live Arcade game. Once I look past the fluff the game just feels kind of “lifeless” to me, I don’t know how to really explain it. And I’ve had to wait 2 months for it to get this far.

Console lobbies would help immensely, actually seeing other players before playing with them on a server would make it feel like less of a ghost town. It’s a pain trying to play online and not knowing if I’m actually going to play against more than a couple humans. If I quit a match because it only has 2 people playing I have no idea how the next game I join is going to be and it turns into a rinse-repeat scenario.

No lobbies in a basically online-only game released in 2011 seems totally absurd and just reeks of time crunch. And it’s not just a small gripe, it has, combined with the shoddy launch, irreparably hurt the online community.

Late edit: With all that said, however, I am happy SD is taking steps to improve their game. I realize they could have not done any work on it after June 1st or so and moved on without allocating any more resources to help us. I am looking forward to the DLC and any future patches as I do have faith they will improve the gameplay. I don’t expect a complete revival, but it is nice to know they’re reading our concerns. While it very well may have been Bethesda pushing them to release the game before it was ready, feeling frustrated with the end product is unavoidable. I love objective based gameplay and there’s no alternative to Brink, at least on consoles, so all we can do is appreciate the help and hope the game improves. It was their first attempt and releasing a game across 3 platforms at once and unfortunately it just seems like they spread themselves too thin and simply did not have time to optimize the game.

I love the game. Not that I don’t have my issues, but there aren’t any recent games that I’d rather play.

Not a rarity. Tons of people really like Brink. It grows on ya if you are willing to stick it out. Most who quit did not even unlock the light body type. And many never made it to level 20 or even completed the campaign. Only like 4% ever completed all of the challenges. Brink grows on ya. Its like a chia-pet. Cha-cha-chia!

I had it from launch, but otherwise the same, loving it and no issues playing it.

I enjoy this game because you can see how well this is thought out and I respect how they mixed the roleplaying with FPS. 99% of people play for the objective in online matches the best they can because they won’t otherwise get XP and level up. One kill or death isn’t what determines the game and so on.

Only thing I am afraid of is how long this game’s life span might be. Last time I supported another game starting with B (Breach) it had a life span of 1.5 months and the developer stopped all the support. If we get even the first DLC to play soon then I consider it money well spent.

Love this game, it just needs more players. Thanks for giving the game a chance.

Love Brink. No issues except the sound loss early launch on one map, and lately thats returned but seldomly.

PC runs great, and all updates have been for the better.

Do I have hopes for the perfect game, and things i would have done differently? Yes.

But still its an awesome Class Based Shooter with RPG elements which has been my favorite since Enemy Territory.

Played some more today. Love it. i REALLY hope that those that gave up give it another shot after the patches and DLC. it truely is an awesome game.

You really bought the game at the best time Ghost.

A date for the DLC, patches added, re-balancing completed and only the interested players left in the community. I wish I had waited this long, but it’s been quite a rollercoaster up to this point and has been a good learning experience: Don’t build ALL your hopes on a game.

Now I need to make sure I don’t do that for Gears 3…

Anyhow…welcome to the Brink community. Stick around.

love this game so much i bought a copy for my mate to play. got him online last night and he went from ‘i keep dieing too much’ to doing ok. i think its not as easy to get into as brainless shooters like cod. but when you do its a great game. i now have 4 level 20s and a level 19. looking forward to the DLC!

(FireWorks) #13

I got ten chars sitting here and they havent had a level up for a longer time now. Bet they cant wait to get some more level ups again  Though I must admit, recently I felt some love for other games too…

After about 6 hours of matches today, mostly 4v4s…I have to re-confirm my love for Brink.

It is not a great competition game. It is not a great pub game (that is, playing with completely strangers). But it is probably the best game for playing as a casual clan, or with a group of people who are familiar with each other and who communicate.

The PS3 chatroom games are great. We aren’t pros…but we are good casual players and we communicate a lot. We adapt to what the other team is doing, and the brilliant thing is that our ideas often work…whereas in most games, coordination and adjustments are just a romantic and impractical ideas.

This can be found in other Enemy Territory games ofcourse…but I do really like Brink’s gunplay, with the grenade shooting, and sliding, and badass pistols. Like when you give adrenaline to the soldier planting at the right moment, but the other team starts spamming grenades to knock him down… then everyone on your team just starts shooting all of the grenades in mid-air.

Brink is a pretty troubled game. I do like it though. I play it in short bursts and only occasionally. I usually play light when I want to actually get to the objectives and heavy when I just want to fire my machine gun.

(Smoochy) #16

yeah, im wanting to get my level 20s their new toys. which one to pick first!

im going to have:
1 medium med/op
1 medium soldier/engi
1 light jack
1 medium jack
1 heavy jack

the jacks will try to all be different and have different abilities that suit their body type and the play that goes with it

My personal opinion is that people judge games WAY too hard. One little thing is wrong and everyone has sand in their vajeen. So brink started out with bugs. Find me one game that didnt. you wont. even the best well planned out and trested games will have bugs. Its the nature of the beast. People need to try enjoying the game instead of looking for something wrong at every turn
