Alpha map leak problems ...

Hey all…I knew this would happen…

I just had the first alpha test of my map (see the V2 Factory topic if any one is interested). I had two closed servers test the map. They are both run by players I’ve played ET with for 8 months…

Well, some how my alpha1 got out and is now on the rotation of at least one server (with no contact info of the admin - figures doesn’t it) - well, it’s alpha 1 - we all know what that means…(map functions…)

So what do you do in a situation like that (damn, I wish you could time bomb your bsp file…) grin and bear it?

Hmmm must be one hell of a leak; this is where I picked up your file.
It will be removed off the server in about 10 minutes…I thought these places were a reputiable place to get maps, I see there not now…

yeah, tell me about it…‘cartman’ uploaded the pk3 to a few german sites…even posted my Readme that said that the pk3 was not to be distributed…

Thanks S.S. Heirpie for getting it removed. I’d hate for 6 months of work to get a bad repuation by people playing an alpha1 version. (btw: if you have any feedback - if you played it, might as well PM so I can make improvements for the next version…)

What irritates me the most is that they even copy and paste the Readme along with the download which specifically states :

Distribution / Permissions

This is the first trial of this map and may not be modified in anyway as to appear as a completed map by anyone else than the author.

Authors May Not decompile the BSP as a base to build additional levels.The possibility of using items from this map as prefabs is possible, but you must obtain the author’s written permission first.

You MAY NOT distribute this pk3 file and/or its contents without permission. This file may
not be commercially exploited in any way.

I would totaly agree with Pie on this one. The links he posted is exactly where I got the V2 map. No server admin is stealing your map. It was made for download by whoever runs that German site. I’ve removed the map on request.

J-Inaria - sorry about the ‘stole’ in the subject line (it wasn’t originally like that but I ran out of room in the title rant and was a little hot when I made the post) - so sock please change the title to something more appropriate :slight_smile:

I did find the sites it is uploaded to and requested they remove it.

Again, sorry to all admins out there who I insulted by saying ‘stole’ - chaulk iit up to a blind unthinking rage at the time on the post…

I doubt Bob is blaming anyone directly (I’m one of his server admins who tested out his map) but there was a serious leak somehow and people started playing a map in “development” which may have lower their opinion of the final product. It’s just hard to control all those websites out there that may want to illegally distribute the map (heck some even copy and pasted the disclaimer right beside the download, figures their intelligence)

Nethertheless, the good news is Alpha 2 is ready to be tested and my website will be providing the nice changes done to the map Saturday. If you guys feel like testing the Alpha 2 Map, register on my website and feel free to test the map with the rest of us.

Just remember, it’s a test, nothing else and shouldn’t be distributed. :slight_smile:

I know it’s a stupid thing to say but protect your stuff better and it wont happen. I mean what can you do when it happens? Absolutely nothing.

The only advice I can give you is use a smaller group of map testers and try and get to know the people first. Its usually best to stick to one admin/clan for the initial stages and highlight the copyright in the map loading screen. Most people will ignore readme files or strip them out of the pk3 but loading screenies are alot harder to ignore.

I have send you and your friend messgaes that I’m really sorry.
I have delted tha map.
Normally I read every readme, but I have forgotten that in V2. I say it again: SORRY!
Before this act every mapper has say “thanks” to me that I public it on this german site.
I dont’ must do that, but I want to help everyone Mapper that its Map to the public come and better to be thus discussed can

well, he thought he was doing the right thing by letting people test it (including myself) whom he had played with for many months and had learned to trust.

i am the admin of one of the servers who had tested the map for him, and it was posted the very next day, so i am guessing it was a result of someone that was on my server.

i guess stuff like that just happens though, atleast someone didn’t steal his work and act as if they made it… so it could have been worse.

i (and bob) would appreciate it, cartman, if you told us the source of the map.

I had this map from www.etmaps.de - this was the source for WolfMap and ET-Scene.
And right, I only copy’n’paste the readme for the filebase.

Write in the loadingpicture of your map that this map is not for distribution, then the last one will see it.

I remove the map from the news and from the downloadserver.

Sorry for that.

BTW: The Map is near Fial for me, just a few bugs in it.
