ALARMS! Where are they?

Just watched the old video preview of ‘Freedom of Movement’ and I noticed when Paul Wedgewood was talking about the alarm triggers if you go through it obviously it sounds. I was thinking…what happened to that idea? Honestly that could have been a great idea for certain levels where you can emphasize on S.M.A.R.T. Like the Airport if you go through the alarms if could trigger certain doors to lock for a few seconds , give the location of the enemy if implemented correctly or have turrets pop-out, while having cool downs of course. Or you can have a room where there are laser triggered alarms that will set unless you slide, climb, or vault through to reach a destination.

I work in the videogame industry. Used to work for EA Sports, now I am at an iPad game company. I can verify that game designs change all the time, especially for a new IP. I am working on five different titles currently and they update design docs like every week for the new games. Our producers appreciate the testing team’s suggestions since we’re the ones playing the game the most. It’s kinda cool when you see your suggestion make it into a game.

Anyways, for whatever reason, whether it be for balancing, budget, or it just didn’t implement well, SD scrapped the alarm idea.

I would have seen no point in it, when the map loads you know the enemy is coming, you dont need an alarm to tell you that, it was probably there to show the effectiveness of SMART since people couldn’t understand the concept

Dumb idea. It’s hard enough to win when attacking.

Why people keep bringing up stuff from development? As part of the process some things don’t make the cutting room floor and some do. Its the nature of the creative process.

I don’t think the OP was out of line. He was just wondering what happened to that bit of the level since it was a major point when first explaining the SMART System.

It is true though: there are no environmental disadvantages for a player who doesn’t use SMART. There are no shark pits to jump over or live electric wires to slide under. SMART still kicks ass, but SD just didn’t make it too involved with the environment, except for shortcuts and gaining higher ground.

I like the alarm concept. Could go as far as replacing radar and you wouldn’t need a HUD element. With color and/or sound coding you would have approximations of pushes. What I like even more is the idea of intentionally setting 1 alarm off to draw defenders to it and have a push of S.M.A.R.T-asses smarting their way through the flank. SD, please table this for at least 1 map (maybe broaden it for BRINK 2?)

Probably because what’s shown at development stage gives people an idea as to what the game will be like.

Not everyone understands the industry and the fact that designs can change multiple times before they go ‘gold’.

True. Not everything goes on the disk, for sure. And not everyone understands the industry and design world. Oh well. Stuff can always be added as DLC down the road, I suppose, but somethings, just don’t make the final cut. Look at Lord of the Rings. Some times you got no choice, ya got to cut out scenes with Liv Tyler… even if you don’t really want to.
