It’s best really not to make more problems in Dirty Bomb. I understand your frustration in the game balance in a closely matched game and it gets upset by someone being afk (because the phone rang, the cat needs to go out, the dog needs something, kids are hurt, etc etc) but please, don’t suggest drastic things and make the devs do a Jeff Kaplan.
MatchMaking is SD’s push right now and creating threads that can distract the attention of developers is not going to help the playerbase. A bit of common sense or as Australians have it, a pinch of salt is needed to move to better things so get your game on and exercise a bit of tolerance in pub games. If you’re grinding for credits, play smarter, not harder.
I still find it confusing that people go AFK when RL hits during playing. I always disconnect when things like that happen. It’s still a little unfair for your team but at least someone else can fill your spot.
And gameplay is far more predictable if no one covers your back during repairing the EV as opposed to you expecting the team mate behind you to shot at an enemy approaching, only to find out he’s AFK.
All you lose are a few credits and a little XP. I don’t find that reason enough to remain on the server doing nothing and ruining the game for others.

Sometimes life is a lot more unpredictable and busy than you’d think. I work from home, have a dog, cat, 2 young kids and a wife. There is plenty of possibilities that can arise causing me to have to go AFK.
If I simply quit the game each time I had to drop the game for a couple seconds or a minute, I’d almost never finish a match and I’d probably just uninstall the game. (again… )
That being said, when I’m in the game I do contribute to the objective, which I feel makes up for the times I’m missing.
If you step away for less then 30 seconds as suggested, you’ll be fine.
If you step away for 30 or more seconds every couple of hours and get afk-kicked, hardly anything is lost.
If you step away for 30 or more seconds several times an hour then I find it very selfish to play a fast team shooter. I also have messy evenings from time to time but don’t play DB then. Single player games where pausing doens’t hurt anyone or turn based strategy games like Civ 5 are perfectly fine though. Maybe I’m just too nice a guy and expect too much from others.
Anyway, business wise it’s probably makes sense to keep the afk limit fairly high. I’d imagine that gamers with busy RL don’t have time to unlock mercs and loadouts using credits and invest more money than freeriders with better control over their own life. If that’s SD’s reasoning behind the current afk limit, I can respect that.
I just hope that if we ever get community servers, the afk limit will be an option the admin can change. And I highly doubt that servers with 30 seconds will be deserted.
15 seconds would probably be better, but yeah, very short. When I’m actually playing the game, there is no reason why I need 30 seconds to 2 minutes to be afk. 10-15 seconds is enough for me to adjust my crotch, gulp some soda, take my shoes off, or any other tid bits. Any longer, and I just disconnect.
Exactly this. Just let the people on the team decide whether they should be kicked. Make it a @$!# democracy and it’ll work just fine. No need to make a complicated detection system, just let the people make the choice.
Isn’t it the case right now that the both teams vote, thereby requiring a higher count? This is a voting flaw I’ve seen in other games, and it’s really a head scratcher why Devs would ever design it like that, at least for AFK votes.
This is one reason why I suggested a vote menu where you can select the reason and then the reason will be posted for everyone to see. AFK and team abuse (screwing around) votes should be limited to the same team only since the opposing team gains nothing by voting out opposing AFK’s.
Cheating votes should require both teams to vote because it’s the opposing team that is negatively effected, and it’s also something that can be abused with bogus votes, so you need a higher tally.
Additionally to the reduced times suggested by @Herr_Hanz it could be helpful if the other players would have to vote “Yes” for the AFK to remain in the game instead of having to vote “Yes” for them to be kicked.
Unfortunately, there’s 2 problems with that: 1) It could be abused, and 2) a lot of people just don’t vote as a rule, and so player elegibility would be dependent on people who normally don’t vote. A lot of people would be kicked.

I feel the same way. If I have to step away for more than 10 seconds, I just disconnect. I don’t want to hurt my team.
You know, one thing that would go hand in hand with an AFK adjustment would be making server joins easier and quicker. DB has one of the most long, drawn out, delayed, delayed again, quirky, buggy join systems I’ve seen. Joining is actually kind of a chore compared to other games. This is extra significant when joining Execution mode because you will typically lose 1-2 minutes by missing that first round as well as the round count for a mission.
If players knew they could get back in the fight in as little as 5-10 seconds on a different server, more might be willing to disconnect.
the reason people go afk is because we dont want to lose our 10k points just because we need to tie our shoelaces or get the cat out the door, its not the matchmaking system that makes us go afk.
15 seconds is too short. stay with 30 with kick at 1 minute. in CSGO you get 1 minute of timeout to go to the bathroom or something.

i vouch for this, i live with dozen of cats
sometimes when a kitten pee on your ceramic floor and you dont want it to stain forever so you have to wipe it

Wouldn’t we still have those points if we switch to spectator?
I didn’t really read any of this thread, but here’s my 2 cents:
Keep the current system, but don’t even call a vote to kick. If they are AFK (no mouse movement or keyboard movement) for 30 seconds straight, they get put on a watchlist. If they go AFK for more than 30 seconds again (including 60 seconds straight), they get auto kicked.
AFK’s aren’t just annoying, they RUIN games. Ruined games are not good for the business and longevity of the game. Word gets around about imbalanced games, and fewer people will play.
Voting them out either doesn’t work, or takes too long to do it, by which time the damage is already done. This problem is especially damaging in objective mode, when you can literally lose the game in 5 minutes.
AFK’s in this game should be booted after 10 seconds, imo. This isn’t 32 player CoD or 64 player BF.
So what you are saying is that if I am doing really well (say 15k-20k xp) and I need to go and give my brother some food to eat for less than a minute, I am therefore ruining the game and deserve to get kicked.
Just so you know, after 1 minute of standing still, the game will auto-initiate a votekick against the afk player (yes, votekick does work). After another minute, the player will get auto kicked for being idle.
Finally, this is a pub we are talking about. What the fuck are you expecting?! If this were in ranked or PUG, I would understand, however, right now, your argument is completely invalid. Complain somewhere else please.
