Addressing the Pointlessness of DB's Grind

(hawkeyeguy99) #1

Let me start off by saying I’m only level 59 in-game so no, I haven’t been around as long as some of y’all. As we get closer to 1.0 launch, I wanted to make one last attempt to address the #1 issue I have with the game: the lack of endgame content. At level 59 I’ve unlocked every merc, have the best loadout for each, have cobalts for every merc I want them for, (even multiples with different loadouts for a few) and have special editions stacked to the teeth. I’m “done”. There’s really nothing else for me to spend my credits on or work towards beyond the seasonal events that give me something to spend my credits on. (like Melee Mayhem thanks SD!) But seasonal content goes away and doesn’t last that long. In my opinion, we need a more permanent option to the pointless grind once mercs are unlocked.

The idea I have suggested once or twice in comments on other posts is add merc missions: specific goals or challenges to complete with each individual mercs which give rewards like rads, credit boosters, and ultimately a merc specific trinket and skin ONLY unlockable through completion of these challenges. Things like: get 500 frag grenade kills, disperse 10,000 health with healing pulse, revive 5 mercs in 30 seconds, etc.

This is already implemented in a way in the medals system but the rewards for getting these medals is simply score boosting which boils down to xp and credits which are fine, but neither of them are good for anything beyond stockpiling till the next seasonal event. There should be something more to do in the game beyond unlock all the mercs and get a few loadouts.

Agreed, im about level 45 at the moment (the devs somehow lost my previous account data, and are pretty much avoiding the issue). I would technically have every merc atm but i dont because cough cough devs mess up a lot. But i feel theres a lack of content as well. Im just grinding for another card or skin for weapon. I want something new…

That would be interesting. But it would have to have tiers of progression. “give out 1000 ammo packs as skyhammer” probably won’t encourage anyone who isn’t already a skyhammer main to bother with it, but “give 100 ammo packs, then 250, then 500 and so on” just might.

Beyond giving high level players something else to do, it would be good for encouraging newer players to try out different mercs as well, and not do what I did, which was pretty much only play aura until around level 25

This is not the type of game that is supposed to have an end-game content.

The “stop” button or the console command “quit” is the end-of-the game session.

So what’s left for me to spend my credits on? Seasonal events like the current Melee Mayhem. (which is great by the way) But once those events are gone, there’s no reason to keep playing beyond the fact that I like the game.

Playing the game because you like it should be the one and only reason to keep playing, so you are on the right track.

Concerning lack of goals to spend credits on: first of all, too many credits isn’t a really a problem. They just stick around but won’t go bad. Just wait for an event where the loadouts or weapon cards obtainable with credits look particularly nice for your personal taste.

And with the current melee event still going, you can hope that SD eventually implements a proper trading system where you can sell weapon cards for money on Steam (similar to CS:GO). So go and buy dozens of cobalt Katanas you can possibly sell to 12 year old Phantiots in the future, making them happy and you filthy rich.

Alas, methinks the beta weapon skins will not be trade-able

I really love the post, I think the other portion of end game that comes around would have been tournaments and competitive play seasons (so they don’t fade away).

But some more imagination needs to go into those skins and into a supporting system for it to be lucrative and a desired endgame.

Shoe specifically says you’ll be able to trade them in the latest dev video.
“…So if you’ve got a friend who missed out on the gold katana […] and you have a spare lying around, you can now extort them for whatever you’d like”

So much for my listening skills. I stand corrected…until SD changes their mind…

As for me, during normal days, the grind is earning credits as much as you can so, when events are around, you can spend all of them to get limited contents.

(RageSmirk) #13

For me at level 30 I already got all mercs. And yeah I lost the enthusiasm I had before.
Now at level 35 I’m starting to see the defects within the game. Bugs that are popping, and such.
